This expedition is a opportunity for students to discover a new culture, meet new people, explore new places and make a difference to the lives of others.
After a day of cultural immersion, your child will participate in local sustainable development projects. This includes working in local primary schools, children's centres and construction programmes in villages. Your child then has the opportunity to go on an educational safari through the Tarangire National Park, learning about the region's diverse flora and fauna.
In the run up to the expedition, students are responsible for fundraising for the service work they will carry out in Arusha. Raising money for the trip gives your child ownership of the project as well as developing money management skills.
This is a truly rewarding opportunity. Our students will make a significant impact on improving the lives of others while strengthening their own personal leadership, flexible thinking and teamwork skills.
TANZANIA SERVICE TRIP
The Tanzania service trip takes part every year for our Year 12 students.
A requirement for students is to fundraise $350 and this money will go towards materials needed for the service project.
The projects that the current Year 13 students who went to Tanzania were building a nursery school, constructing goat sheds, constructing school desks and installing solar panels.
We use the Winter Fair and Summer Fair to help raise this money.

All of the profits from the Summer Fair will go directly to funding the materials needed for the volunteer work we do in Tanzania. These materials allow us to aide disadvantaged families and communities who lack such basic utilities as electricity and a safe place to heat their meals.
A portion of the funds we raised last year went to growing and supporting a goat, which was given to a family that was deemed in need by the charity (e.g. disabled single parent with multiple children). It was also to pay for building materials such as wooden planks and nails for the construction of a goat shed for the family that the goat was given to. We worked for two days on building the shed with the materials that were purchased using the proceeds that were made. In conjunction with the goat shed, the recipient received a solar panel that we installed, which included a battery to provide constant electricity for the first time in their homes. The light in their home is a major benefit for these families as they can now be productive during the night, while before they were unable to work in the dark. This also allows the children to be more productive after sundown as they can now stay up later to study and do their homework.
In Tanzania, only 57% of children attend primary school, and for children with disabilities this figure is less than 1%. To try and alleviate this problem, we helped construct an extension for the nursery school located at the Seeway center which will double as a school for children with disabilities. Large scale building materials, such as cement mixes and bricks were purchased to aid in the construction of an additional school building run by the charity for disabled students and primary students. We also participated in the construction of the building, including cement mixing, bricklaying and plastering.
Moreover, most schools in Tanzania are chronically underfunded and under-resourced. The school that we visited, for example, only received an annual budget of $100 from the Tanzanian government, all of which must be parceled out to pay for staffing, materials, and building upkeep. As a result, students are often left to sit on the floor when the there are not enough desks to compensate for their great number, with up to six children trying to cram themselves onto one desk. To help with this problem, some of the funds that we raised went to procurement of nails, soft wood, and glue for the construction of desks, which we carried out. Additional school supplies for existing schools were also purchased using a smaller portion of the proceeds, to buy things such as pens, pencils, glue sticks, coloring pencils, paper, books, and textbooks, all of which went to the children in the schools supported by the Seeway Charity.
