Mike Horton

Having led my last school to great success due to the fabulous staff that we had, I felt that I needed a new challenge and when I was offered the opportunity to open a school in Chicago I jumped at the opportunity. It is not often that you have the chance to begin a school and place your own ethos in a school and certainly this was too good an opportunity to pass up.

Before my appointment as the founding headmaster of the British School of Chicago, I was selected to travel to Canada and joined an elementary school in British Columbia as a member of their leadership team. On returning to the UK I was appointed as a headmaster in two schools, transforming both from small schools into highly successful schools that won many academic and sporting honours. During my career in the UK I was appointed as an Estyn Inspector, a threshold assessor and was chosen to be part of a panel that accredited a University to enable them to offer Master’s Degree programmes.

Sport has played a large part of my life, with me representing my University in a large number of sports, including rugby and soccer, and also representing my country while in college in table tennis and tennis. After leaving University, I continued to play most sports and played at a high standard in both rugby and soccer and continued to represent my country at tennis, winning the national title at doubles before moving to Chicago in 2001. I have two children who I am very proud of who have followed my interest in sport, both playing Varsity tennis at New Trier High School and representing their college teams. My wife has also been a huge supporter of them and we both travelled regularly to watch them play whilst in College.

The teachers here make this a unique place for me to work; their dedication and teamwork are outstanding and this has the desired effect of inspiring the children’s learning. The atmosphere in the school is so different to any other school that I have worked in, with a happy, learning buzz wherever you go in the school.
