    Studying Performing Arts

Fiona Currie

My main reason for coming to British International School of Chicago was to continue to work in a school with an international ethos that followed the International General Certificate of Secondary Education and International Baccalaureate programs. Also, learning a foreign language at such a young age has opened so many doors for me, and this is why I believe so strongly in learning languages in Primary school.

At the age of four, I moved to France with my family and began school there, which is where my love of the French language began. After high school, I went to University of Manchester to study for a bachelor's degree in French studies. During my four years there, I spent 12 months teaching EAL (English as an Additional Language) in a French Lycée and two months teaching English in a holiday camp in Llanes, Spain. After completing my degree, I went on to study for my postgraduate certificate of education at University of Cumbria.

Until my move to Chicago, I had been working for five years teaching French and Spanish at an international Primary and Secondary school in Windermere, UK. I taught across a wide age range from Key Stages 2-5  As well as teaching languages, I also worked in the boarding houses as a live-in house parent.

BISC follows the International Primary Curriculum in the Primary school, which creates many opportunities for cross-curricular learning as well as a focus on languages and internationalism. The students are treated and taught as individuals and are encouraged to challenge themselves. At BISC there is a real whole-school feel, with student, staff and parent involvement, and staff is extremely helpful and supportive of each other.

As a language teacher I love to travel and I enjoy experiencing and learning about new cultures. I also love music and sport, particularly live events.
