    Studying Performing Arts

Michelle Matthews

Drama & Music Specialist

I have always loved performing and still experience the buzz of excitement before a performance starts – even when it isn’t me on stage! I enjoy sharing the experience with my students and actively encourage every student I teach to perform in front of other people.

I fell in love with the idea of becoming a Music teacher at a young age and actively pursued Music throughout my education, achieving Grade 8 Saxophone, Grade 6 Clarinet and Grade 6 Piano before leaving school.

I earned bachelor’s degrees in Music and French at University of Huddersfield, during which time I spent a year in France. While there, I taught English as a foreign language at a high school and performed classical and jazz music in local cafés and restaurants. My first professional gig, however, was at the Chicago Rock Café, Huddersfield, playing saxophone with The Blue Mustangs, a Blues Brothers tribute band.

On top of teaching Music for the past 14 years, I have also taught the wider subject of performing arts. As an enthusiastic amateur dancer, I have taught tap dance lessons and assisted with choreography. I have also helped direct. My recent musical theatre shows include Beauty and the Beast, Grease, Guys and Dolls, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Shop of Horrors, Peter Pan, We Will Rock You and Wizard of Oz. When working as Musical Director for shows, I always enlist students to perform in the bands and encourage them to experience as much of the role as possible, including adapting and arranging their own music and learning to use the various music technology associated with playing live.

I embrace new challenges and firmly believe that you never stop learning, which is why, in recent years, I have learned to play the drum kit, guitar, ukulele and how to use digital stage lighting. At present, I am learning to play the trumpet - much to the distress of my two cats! In my spare time, I love to surf and run. I enjoy riding motorbikes and I’m looking forward to learning how to snowboard.
