We at Compass Rayyan would like to extend our warmest wishes to you on this national holiday.
Our Qatar National Day assembly was a fantastic celebration of the Qatari culture and traditions and the children all performed their roles with poise and great dignity. It was inspiring to see so many members of our school dressed in the national colours of our host country. The Arabic breakfast again proved to be a great way to bring children together and socialise in a different way than normal. The warmth and generosity of the parents and children who have contributed to this special celebration is truly appreciated.
I have been asking the children this week what photographs and photography mean to them and the answers were as varied as they were interesting. ‘Photography is art, but real-life’, ‘photography is when you take an instant freeze on a moment’, ‘photographs help to share memories’, ‘photographs are what we look at to make us wonder’. These four quotes, from children in years 2, 3, 5 and 6, stood out as being examples of how a topic can generate true thinking. The STEAM week, which ended with a truly phenomenal showcase on Thursday, introduced the topic brilliantly.
Visiting photographers, scientists, cultural attachés and more all contributed to children embracing the learning. As well as improved photography skills, the children also deepened their understanding of reflection, refraction, perspective, depth and how an eye focuses; bringing science and maths to the forefront of their thinking. A heartfelt thank you to all those who have been involved in this project, and to Madame Amandine for coordinating STEAM so successfully.
It is with sincere sadness that I report that Mrs McKelvie has resigned her position at Compass Rayyan due to family reasons. Mrs McKelvie has been a true asset to the school in her time here and we wish her and her family the best in the future. I am pleased to be able to announce that we have appointed Mrs Angela Thackray who will take EY2A from the start of Term 2.
On Thursday, 9 January, Themaid Secondary will be holding their showcase assembly at 7.30am in our school hall; presenting their teaching and learning in Year 7 and onwards. A further reminder, the week beginning Sunday, 2 February is our International Week and therefore you may wish to think about costumes, especially if you are travelling this holiday.
I wish you all a lovely break and hope that you have fun with your families. I look forward to welcoming you all back safely on Sunday, 5 January.
