Early Years 1 Teacher

I qualified as a teacher in 2001 in the UK and worked for two years there before starting my international teaching adventure.  During my career I have taught all primary age groups and led both curriculum subjects as well as pastoral teaching teams.  As my career has progressed I have developed a passion for the teaching and learning of younger children so, having originally thought that I would focus on teaching science to Years 5 and 6, I have found myself drawn to the cross curricular approach and my favourite year groups are Early Years and Milepost 1.

I have worked in British International Schools around the world beginning in the British School of Houston, moving to the Middle East to Kuwait where I worked in The English School.  I then made a short pit stop back in the UK and taught in an independent primary school close to my hometown of Colchester, and met my now husband.

We moved together to Beijing, China and worked in Harrow International School Beijing where my role changed and grew as I moved from being a class teacher to the Head of Pre-Prep.  After five wonderful years there, the pollution and the addition of two young children to our own family, we decided to move ‘home’ for a year and again returned to the UK.

After a few months in the UK the lure of international teaching grew irresistible and we were delighted when we secured jobs here at Compass International School, Doha in 2015.  I joined as a Year 1 teacher at Madinat Khalifa and have since moved to Gharaffa to work in Early Years.  In 2017 I moved into my new role as Assistant Head of Gharaffa campus and am thrilled to be working alongside my colleagues as we continue to develop our school.

I am passionate about student leadership and have worked to introduce many new leadership opportunities for our children to undertake and develop their leadership of others.  My second passion is speaking and listening, and as a shy child myself I hated speaking in front of others.  I overcame this through amateur dramatics and am working to introduce more drama experiences for our children over the coming year, initially within the classroom for our youngest children in Early Years.  I continue this love of drama outside of school and have taken part in pantomimes and plays in all the countries I have lived in, including as part of the Doha Players here in Qatar.
