Head of IB English

I am extremely excited by my role as Head of English and Drama at NAS Dubai and cannot wait to continue my work with the talented staff, students and parents at this forward-thinking and aspirational school. It is both a privilege and a goal to be leading our students on their journey to examination success in English and Drama.

In 2007 I graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University in Kent with a PGCE in English and Drama. My first position, upon graduating with my teaching certificate, was at a highly regarded all boys’ school near my hometown of Brighton in the UK. During my four years there I worked with a small team of County Council advisors in launching literacy schemes to the West Sussex area. I then continued my career progression as Head of English for four years, and in my final year as a member of the Core Leadership Team, at BVIS a new NAIS in Vietnam. I joined the school in its opening year and had the pleasure of being an integral part of building what is now recognised as a fantastic and highly praised academic arena for bi-lingual learning.

My teaching philosophy is simple, I believe that if you have high expectations for your students and can inspire them through your teaching practice, they will achieve their very best and more; learning should be challenging but enjoyable. I place emphasis on the student as an individual, recognising early their talents and nurturing them as they progress through the years. I am a true believer in encouraging personal engagement and interpretation when studying literature through discussion-based learning activities and debates, which are central to my teaching.

Besides English, theatre is another one of my passions. Having spent 10 years 'treading the boards' in several amateur dramatics groups in Sussex, I now find being involved in school productions just as, if not more, rewarding. My fairly recent move to Dubai means l am, once again, living by the sea, which is where I am most at home.
