primary teacher helping year 3 students in maths class

Katy O'Mahony

I studied for my initial degree in my home city of Limerick, graduating with a BA Hons in English Literature and History.

I then decided to follow in the footsteps of a long line of teachers in my family and embarked on a PGCE with History Specialism at Masters Level in Liverpool Hope University. Since graduating, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to teach in a diverse range of settings, in a number of different countries such as the UK, Ireland, Serbia and right here in the UAE.

For the past three years, I have been teaching in the British International School Abu Dhabi in Key Stage 2. I have loved my time there getting to know students, teachers and the wider community. Over the past year, I have enjoyed the role of Student Leadership Coordinator, in which I have created school-wide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills. Helping students to develop personally and socially and preparing them to have a positive impact on others both now and in the future is particularly important to me.

Previous to my time in Abu Dhabi, I spent two years teaching in Year 6 in a Junior School in South East London. During this time, I was afforded the opportunity to lead Literacy across the school. Promoting a love of the written word; reading and securing progress in children’s writing across the school and creating a school anthology of students’ writing endeavours were some of the most inspiring aspects of that role.

I love to travel and since arriving in Abu Dhabi, the number of stamps in my passport has increased dramatically as I relish the occasion the holidays bring to experience new countries and cultures. Camping and hiking have become firm favourites of mine since moving to the UAE. I love heading off to the desert, mountains and wadis at the weekend to spend time in the great outdoors. I have recently reignited an old passion of mine by attending art classes and relearning various painting techniques. A budding Picasso? Probably not - but it’s the fun that counts!

I am excited for the new possibilities and adventures that working in NAS Dubai will bring. I am looking forward to meeting my new class and I know that there will be lots of fun and learning throughout the year ahead.
