Key Stage One (Years 1 - 2)

We encourage children to be academically inquisitive and to take responsibility and initiative as they move into this more structured phase of their schooling at Nord Anglia International School in Hong Kong.

Key Stage One in our primary school curriculum consists of two year groups, Year 1 and Year 2. During Year 1 we build on children’s previous learning in the six areas of the early years foundation stage curriculum.

Children are then taught in key areas such as Guided Reading, Phonics and Mental Maths. We place a strong emphasis on the development of core skills in Numeracy and Literacy. Teachers ensure that fundamental building blocks are embedded and reinforced regularly.

Subjects such as Science, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE), Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Music and Physical Education (PE) are grouped into topics. Teachers plan themes that reflect the interests of the children in each class, and a balance is provided between creative and physical activities, ensuring that the curriculum develops the whole child.

Learning outside of the classroom is an important part of our children’s development and this is supported and enhanced through trips, visits, whole school events and theme days.

Learning in Primary Key Stage One

We plan our primary school curriculum carefully with long, medium and short-term goals for our pupils. Our teachers adopt a creative and practical approach which develops our pupil's natural curiosity and fosters a desire to learn, think and take appropriate risks.

We provide regular opportunities for children to learn beyond the classroom, including educational visits, themed days, after school activities and drama and music productions. We also recognise the role of technology in the current and future lives of our students and create meaningful opportunities for children to learn, explore and use modern technology across the curriculum.

Through this formal and informal curriculum, we begin to develop the social confidence, self-reliance and self-discipline that will help them to form positive relationships with other pupils and adults. Our Key Stage One pupils will begin to be more globally aware, and will start to understand what it means to be part of a community.

Continuous Assessment

We strive to ensure that all children achieve at a high level. Thus we carefully plan learning and development around the individual needs and interests of each child, using modern assessment methods to ensure that every student makes continuous progress. These include Assessment for Learning (AFL) techniques including self and peer assessment as well as sharing the success criteria, which helps to ensure each child knows what to do in order to progress.

We ensure that the high standards achieved by our Key Stage One pupils prepare them for the best possible transfer into Key Stage Two as highly engaged and self-motivated learners.

Please note our curriculum is subject to change as we are constantly updating the contents.
