First of all, here are a few fun facts about languages at ICS:

  • We have students from over 70 nationalities at our school.
  • Foreign languages taught at native level this year: Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Dutch, Lithuanian, Italian, Romanian, Hebrew, Spanish, French and English.

To celebrate our rich language diversity, as well as become aware of what home languages mean to us, our school celebrated International Mother Tongue Language Day on Tuesday 11th February. The English as an Additional Language (EAL) department organised many different activities, including:

  • Language quotes in the entrance to the Primary school to spark deep conversations.
  • Displays with students’ work that put their home languages front and centre. This activity showed how students are using their home languages to construct meaning, to inquire and elicit prior knowledge.

Secondary students and staff also took part in this celebration by making a language passport, exploring a mother language fair and rocking out to multilingual karaoke.
