What is something that your students don’t know about you – but would impress them if they did?
I studied classical singing. I have been singing since before I can remember. My family is very musical – my mom was also a music teacher and some of my extended family members were singers and composers. I joined choir in first grade and started performing in musicals in third grade. I still remember and try to emulate the directors I had then - they were always enthusiastic, energetic, and willing to give me and other students opportunities to cultivate our interests and talents.
I knew for sure that I wanted to be a teacher when I had the chance to assistant direct my high school show choir. Leading such a large group of people in a unified and beautiful performance of self expression was very powerful. I performed in several musical theatre and operatic shows throughout high school and college, and still enjoy singing in choirs. I try to spend my spare time traveling, reading and sewing.
