Modern Foreign Languages

Languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we live and work. Learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment.

Pupils learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. By making comparisons, they gain insight into their own culture and society. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.

The study of languages at BSKL includes:

  • the spoken and written forms of the target language
  • the interrelationship between sounds and writing in the target language
  • the grammar of the target language and how to apply it
  • a range of vocabulary and structures
  • learning about different countries and cultures
  • comparing pupils’ own experiences and perspectives with those of people in countries and communities where the target language is spoken.

Mandarin at BSKL is differentiated according students’ abilities; the whole course consists of 10 levels, in three main categories. In Level 1, 2 and 3, Han Yu Pin Yin and some basic Chinese characters are learned as the students’ primary learning objective. In Level 4, 5 and 6, students express daily phrases through reading short stories, whilst in Level 7, 8 and 9, students get to know more about Mandarin language and sinology.

Spanish at BSKL has a communicative and active approach. Students learn to communicate through being given a range of tasks which link in with the National Curriculum Programme of Study. They will learn how to give and obtain information using the target language on a range of topic areas. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of the target language, develop language skills, develop language learning skills and develop cultural awareness.

French at BSKL has a communicative and active approach.  The contemporary culture of France and French speaking countries is featured as an integral part of the presentation.  The course develops the language associated with self and personal relationships and widens the focus to include language associated with the outside world.

The MFL curriculum is designed to prepare students for IGCSE and A Level, its contents are innovative which suit the students’ abilities and which meet their practical needs. The curriculum is also designed to create a learning environment in which everyone loves learning language and in which students can prepare for their exams at ease.
