Student Report, Max Pruden, SEA NAE Games 2018, Cambodia

On Thursday 29 November 2018, 18 students from Years 5 and 6 headed to the airport to catch a flight to Phnom Penh in Cambodia. We were going there to join the Nord Anglia S.E.A Games to play basketball and teeball against around 6 other Nord Anglia Schools from across the South East Asia Region.

Mr Dean, Mr Moseley and Ms Smart were the coaches of the 2 teams.

We arrived in Phnom Penh late and went straight to Hotel Cambodia where we went straight to sleep because we had to train hard the next day, even though the competition didn’t start until Saturday.

After training for both basketball and teeball on Friday morning the whole group went shopping to a local shopping mall. We also went to the movies and had lunch at the shopping mall and to the games arcade next door. Everyone thought it was really fun.

On Friday evening we attended a dinner with the other 6 schools in the competition at our hotel. The dinner consisted of all different types of food- and I slept very well!

We had to wake up at 6.15am on Saturday morning to meet for breakfast before catching the bus to the BIS in Phnom Penh. Then we separated into our 2 teams- 8 in the girls' team and 10 in the boys' team. The boys' team played basketball on the first day and the girls' team played teeball.

The competition was tough in both sports. The boys won 2 games out of their 5 games of basketball and drew one match with Regents Pattaya to be placed 5th and the girls' team lost their matches narrowly.

The weather was very hot and it was a long day of competition, finishing at 5.30pm, so we had dinner at school with kids from some of the other schools.

After dinner, we went back to the hotel and it was lights out at 9pm.

On Sunday morning we met at breakfast at 6.15am and went straight to the sports competition where the girls' team were playing basketball and the boys' team were playing teeball. The boys' team came 3rd  after a very tight match against Regents Pattaya in the teeball competition which meant we were awarded a medal at the end of the competition. The girls played well and just missed out on a trophy coming 5th place.

The weather was really hot again and at 5.30pm the games all finished and we all attended the victory ceremony.

At the victory ceremony, the boys' team had to go up to the stage to collect the 3rd place medal. Everybody who participated in the competition was awarded participation medals. Mia and I were awarded the most valuable players award for our team but the whole team celebrated as everyone played extremely well and we all had lots of fun.

From the school, we went to the airport and caught a late night flight home to Yangon. We landed in Yangon at roughly 12:30pm where we were met by our tired parents who took us home for a well-deserved rest.

On behalf of the students, I would like to thank Mr Dean, Mr Moseley and Ms Smart for coaching us and helping us improve our skills at basketball and teeball. And most of all for making it so much fun for all of us. Thank you!
