Student Council

At Nord Anglia International School Rotterdam, our Student Council (STUCO) serves an important role in the life of our community.

I wanted to help make the voice of the student body great. I wanted everyone to feel like they had a say in what happens in the school. Beatriz, Grade 11 student

Student Council is an ambitious group that strives to give students a voice in determining school issues and proposing ideas for solutions. In addition, its role is to unite the student body, get students involved, and foster a positive climate throughout the school.

STUCO exists to serve several functions including:

  • Encouraging students to have a voice in the decisions that shape their school
  • Developing their global awareness by considering the needs of a diverse student community
  • Developing crucial life skills such as responsibility, empathy and organizational leadership

We believe that our students' ability to make changes and improvements to their community and the world should start at school. So STUCO takes a leading role in our partnerships with local and international charities.

What are our goals for Student Council members?

Our STUCO  members are making a choice to serve the wider NAISR community. As a school, we also see this as an opportunity for council members to:

  • learn personal leadership skills
  • develop an understanding of group processes
  • foster a better understanding of themselves and their capacity for leadership
  • create an understanding of the importance of leadership
  • grow to assume leadership roles in the school and community

What do our students think about the Student Council?

The school is already an enjoyable place to be, but STUCO organises events that bring the school together. They add a sense of fun and add to the feeling of being at home here. Theophile, Grade 11 student
The most important thing we do is organize fundraisers because then I feel like STUCO isn’t just there to make life at our school more interesting. Sometimes we send clothes and gifts and do toy drives for schools in places that don’t have as many resources as we do. Pheobe, Grade 4 student

How are students elected to the Student Council?

When students decide to run for Student Council, they go through an election process including the following steps:

  • Students running for a position on the council present their “case” to their peers
  • Candidates create a poster and give a speech explaining:
    • why they are a good choice to represent their class or school section
    • what difference they want to make
    • what skills and ideas they will bring to the Council
  • Students vote for the student they want to represent their class or school section
  • Teachers also vote for the Student Council positions
