  • Year 2 Weekly Roundup
English

This week in English the children have identified the features of myths and legends. They have taken part in a variety of fun activities including sorting different stories, reading myths/legends from around the world and evaluating these stories giving them a star rating! Later in the week, the children were introduced to 'How Maui Slowed down the Sun' a myth from New Zealand that is not told in English. The children had to make predictions about the story, acting it out and performing it to the rest of the class. The children had the opportunity to share different myths/legends from around the world and discuss which stories they enjoyed the most.

Why not ask your child what different myths they have been introduced to this week?

Maths

In Maths this week the children have learnt about doubling and halving. They have understood that doubling is the same as multiplying by 2 and halving is the same as dividing by 2. The children also showed off their mental maths skills by answering a series of questions mentally without using resources to help them. The week ended practising counting in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 10s and using this to help with times tables by playing a series of different games.

Can your child practise their times tables at home to prepare for the Times Table Challenge?

Project Work

This week in IPC the children were introduced to their new topic 'Flowers and Insects'. Using the iPads they explored the sensory garden and photographed different flowers and insects. In groups the children sorted a variety of objects into the following categories 'Living', 'Dead' and 'Never Alive'.

This weekend, can you can spot some of the beautiful flowers and insects in Singapore?

Mandarin

This week the students learned to tell the time by the hours and half hours through Kagan activities in order to build up vocabulary such as’点o’clock’ ,’ 现在now’, ‘几how many’  and ‘半 half past’. They have been introduced to the concept of half so as to understand the concept of ‘half past’. The students also learned to ask about time using the question: ‘现在几点?What time is it now?’ To reinforce the vocabulary about time, please use this link: https://quizlet.com/_43btdb

Computing

Children have been shown how to add and format an image in their presentation.  We have also looked at how to save or copy an image from the Internet and use it in our presentation.

Physical Education

PE

In PE lessons the pupils have been introduced to team activities. They have been learning about how to play `as a team` to ensure that they involve all the team members in the game being played.

Swimming

The Year 2 swimming lessons continue to focus on developing the three principal strokes and diving.

Music

Continuing with folk traditions, Year 2 students learned the story of Stravinsky's 'Rite of Spring'. The Joffrey ballet interpretation was used to help students picture and discuss the springtime rituals of pagan Russia.

Homework

Maths Homework

First, the children need to count in steps of 2, 5 and 10. Next, on the back of the sheet use what they've learnt to solve the multiplication questions in numerals and then find the written numbers in the word search.

Challenge Homework

The children need to solve the problems and use the table to show the related facts, an array and the repeated addition number sentence.
