Carla Hyland

Carla Hyland

Secondary School Global Citizenship Teacher, Deputy Head of Secondary School - Learning

Carla has a BSc (Hons) in Law and Psychology and a PGCE (Secondary) in Citizenship both from the London Metropolitan University. She started teaching in Hackney, London, where she worked her way up from being a shell shocked newly qualified teacher to being Head of the PSHE and Citizenship Department and Assistant Head of the Humanities Faculty.

Working in an inner city school gave Carla valuable experience of working with students from a diverse range of backgrounds, as well as those with challenging social, emotional and behavioural needs. Being a Citizenship teacher allowed her to create some really exciting opportunities for the students outside of the classroom, including participation in a National Mock Trial competition and the Youth Philanthropy Initiative. She also developed schemes of learning that were published nationally through The Royal Institute of British Architects and the charity Stonewall.

Itchy feet and experience of international living in her own childhood soon attracted her to look for work abroad and she found herself working at Dover Court in Singapore. She is in her fifth year of teaching at the school and still looks forward to coming to work each day! Since being at Dover Court Carla has been responsible for the creation of our student newspaper and implementing a new IGCSE course in Global Citizenship. She was attracted to Dover Court because of its small school nature, and how much of a community feel it has.

One of her great passions in life is travel. Whilst growing up she travelled a lot and gained experience of life in Nigeria, Malawi, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. As a result it was of little surprise to her family when she told them she  was relocating half way across the world to Singapore! Since moving to Singapore she has continues to travel extensively whenever possible, learned how to scuba dive and regularly participate (badly!) in CrossFit sessions at the school. She also loves cooking and have taken courses in Indian, Cambodian, Thai, Vietnamese and Italian cooking, as well as Christmas cake decorating!
