English as an Additional Language (EAL)

As an international school that teaches in English, from time to time some students need support with their English language skills.

Primary School

In the Primary School, beginners to English and more advanced learners are taught in separate EAL classes. Placement into the beginners or intermediate class, and progression from one to the other is confirmed through assessment that links to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

EAL learners are attached to a two year phase rather than an individual year group. For example, we run a beginners Year 1 and 2 class and an intermediate Year 1 and 2 class. This model is replicated for Years 3 and 4, and again in Years 5 and 6. This model enables teachers to deliver an intensive language programme at the correct level rather than teaching a wide range of English levels in one class.

Our Primary EAL teachers run a tailored English language programme called Super Minds, which is an intensive language programme that has been developed specifically for students who are learning English as an additional language. The programme, published by Cambridge, is used in many schools around the world to support English language learning. It covers the four areas of language development: reading, writing, speaking and listening, and allows students to receive approximately 5 hours of intensive language learning each week. EAL students follow the mainstream maths curriculum for their year group. For example, Year 1 students follow the Year 1 curriculum and students from Year 2 follow the Year 2 curriculum. They receive specialist teaching in music, PE and computing. Those with a higher level of English integrate into a mainstream class for Maths, Project Work (in KS2) and specialist subjects. All EAL students integrate with mainstream for phonics/spelling.

Students are assessed against the CEFR assessment points throughout the year. The assessments aid the teachers in their decision to move a student from beginners to intermediate, to increase integration with mainstream or to make the permanent move to mainstream.

Secondary School

In the Secondary School, students are placed in a separate EAL class with placement and progression confirmed through the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Students are assessed in their speaking, listening, reading and writing proficiency in English. Scores determine whether a student should be in mainstream or EAL and progress is tracked with the assessments to determine when a student will be integrated into the mainstream.

Secondary School EAL runs the Cambridge ‘Eyes Open’ programme for EAL classes. The ‘Eyes Open’ series is the secondary equivalent of the ‘Super Minds’ programme in the primary school and is a language programme specifically aimed at EAL learners that teaches reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students receive intense language teaching with a qualified EAL teacher, as well as attending Maths, PE, Art, Drama, DT, Music and ICT with specialist subject teachers. Students continue to integrate into the remaining mainstream language based subject lessons: History, Geography and Science when they reach the required level according to the CEFR. Once at a determined level in all four skills they are deemed ready for full transfer to mainstream.
