Inter-Form Song Writing Competition

03 November 2015

This year, the first project Year 9 undertook in Music was an inter-form song writing competition.

In lessons we studied different songs and analysed the chords, the lyrics and the structure, including a wide variety of songs from many genres. Artists we studied included Fall Out Boy, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Lily Allen. This enabled us to begin to compose.

We started with the lyrics and then we added chords and melody. We considered how to add contrast to our verse/chorus ideas and began to include instrumental sections or middle 8 sections.

Over the 6 weeks all the forms produced 4 or 5 songs and the best from each form was put forward to be in the final judging. The judges chose the 9H winning entry as the overall winner. They commented that the song had an effective melody and well-chosen chord pattern, interesting instrumentation, along with textures that developed well as the song progressed.

Well done to Sanny, Kim, Jacqueline and Emily for their winning song. The competition was very close and much discussion was needed to choose the 9B song in 2nd place, written and performed by Julie, Nina, Christine, Matthew, Khoi and Adwaith  and the 9C winning song in 3rd place which was by Jia Yu, Lisa, Anna and Christine.

Congratulations to all the year 9 students for their fantastic and imaginative song-writing efforts.
