Careful the things you say

Children will listen

Careful the things you do

Children will see

And learn

Children may not obey but

Children will listen

Children will look to you

For which way to turn

To learn what to be

Careful before you say

“Listen to me’

Children will listen

Stephen Sondheim’s shows are difficult. Fact! The Performing Arts Department love a challenge. Fact! And this is how we came to take on the musical theatre giant, Into the Woods.

We are all about tackling the difficult to create inspiring opportunities for our students and, subsequently, our audiences and, we have certainly achieved this throughout the six month rehearsal process and three night run. We have challenged an audience to think, to listen and to learn and we have allowed students to face the difficult and, be mightily rewarded for it. A standing ovation certainly showed that the audience recognised the very special show they had seen.

I have frequently been impressed by the drive and determination of the cast, musicians and crew and it has delighted me when they take a character on and bring new and exciting things to the rehearsal process. I have nothing but admiration and pride for the wonderful young people that have been part of this journey and it will certainly stick in my memory for a long time.

This was a special show for Year 13 students Thuy Linh Le and Igor Vogels. We bid them a fond farewell as they say goodbye to BIS and embark on exciting new adventures. Both have bought so much to the Performing Arts and have inspired other students to strive for excellence. Thank you for being an integral part of the team. We will miss you very much!

Into the Woods has made us face challenge and it is fair to say we came out the other side knowing a lot more than when we went in. Thank you to everyone that has made this show possible.

Fittingly, the last word should go to Sondheim:

Isn’t it nice to know a lot! … And a little bit not…
