Students from the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City (BIS HCMC) have achieved outstanding success at the Federation of British International Schools in Asia(FOBISIA) Primary Maths Challenge 2026, one of the leading international school maths competitions in Asia.
Eight students from Year 5 and Year 6 represented BIS in Shanghai, competing alongside 308 students from 42 international schools across the region — demonstrating both academic excellence and the strength of BIS HCMC’s primary mathematics programme.

At BIS HCMC, students benefit from opportunities that extend their learning into real-world, international contexts.
Participation in FOBISIA competitions allows students to:
Apply mathematical thinking in complex, unfamiliar situations
Collaborate with peers from leading international schools
Build confidence in high-performance environments
Develop resilience and problem-solving skills
As Mr. Derek our Year 6 Teacher & Maths Leaderand Ms. Ellie, our Year 6 Class Teacher, shared, “After months of preparation and hard work, the children were ready to put their skills to the test — and they embraced every challenge with determination and enthusiasm.”

The FOBISIA Maths Challenge is designed to test a wide range of mathematical skills, including:
Logical reasoning
Mathematical investigations
Numerical accuracy
Data handling
Collaborative problem-solving (including escape room challenges)
This year’s competition introduced separate Year 5 and Year 6 categories, making it the most competitive event to date.

BIS students delivered exceptional results across both team and individual categories:
3rd place overall across all participating schools
Year 6 team: 4th place (just one point from 3rd)

Strong results at international competitions reflect the quality of teaching and curriculum at BIS HCMC.
Our Primary mathematics programme focuses on:
Deep conceptual understanding
Problem-solving and reasoning
Application of maths in real-world contexts
Building confidence and independence
This approach ensures students are well prepared not only for competitions, but also for future academic pathways including IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme.

As a member of FOBISIA, BIS HCMC offers students access to a network of leading schools across the region.
Through FOBISIA events, students:
Benchmark themselves against top-performing peers
