Mr Anthony Rowlands: Weekly Update 07/09/18

Next weekend, Singapore will be hosting its biggest sporting event of the year in the form of the annual Singapore Formula 1 race. It is a wonderful event where the streets of Singapore are converted into an F1 track. In the media recently there has been talk that Vietnam will be hosting an F1 race in the future, which would be a wonderful achievement for our country. This weekend, however, there is a strong link between F1 and BIS HCMC as today a group of Y13 students departed to Singapore to compete in the ‘Formula One for Schools World Finals’.

This is a very prestigious and competitive event  involving schools from around the world, each of whom are representing their countries. Indeed, we are very proud that BIS HCMC is representing Vietnam in Singapore.

The five students making up our team are:

  • Victoria Fethke
  • Juha Lee
  • Jonathan Le
  • Jasmine Nguyen
  • Ji Min Oh

Throughout the preparation period for this event they have been wonderfully guided  by Mr Greg Roberts, who is a Design Technology teacher at British International School, HCMC, and they have certainly been an effective  team from the outset. We wish them well in the coming week. Their first race is against a school representing my home country of Wales! Therefore, for the first time in my life, I will be not supporting Wales in a particular event! These World Finals will be webcast live via the ‘F1 in Schools’ YouTube Channel .   Below is a link to the playlist which has the links for each day.   Detailed timings are provided by clicking on this link.

In addition to the team’s hard work on the racing and tasks involved, they also received a lot of  sponsorship  support. The school and the team really appreciate the support of all the sponsors involved with this venture.

It was a pleasure for me to be able to spend time in some Year 2 classes this morning interacting with them and reading  a story called ‘The Best-Loved Bear’. It is a story about looking after people and being caring. I enjoyed my time with our wonderful Year 2 students very much. I also had the opportunity of visiting F1,F2, F3 and Fundinotots and, once again,  it was such a thrill to see our younger students getting such a positive and exciting education at BIS HCMC.

I wish you all a very pleasant weekend.
