The painting of the original and complex design for this “secret garden” mural took roughly a year, with members working almost every school week on the wall, from sketching the very first designs on paper to drawing the outlines on the wall to the painting itself.
The design itself has adapted and evolved over the course of the painting process and the result has been a complex image consisting of three different scenes. The first, a nighttime scene of the “secret entrance” with a castle looming in the distance and a full moon illuminating an ocean of stars. Look to the middle of the wall and you will find a daytime scene of rolling, green hills, blooming with flowers, and a bed of snowcapped mountains nestled in the distance. As the carpet of flowers transitions into darker and denser vegetation, you enter a jungle, which you will find is buzzing with exotic wildlife. Finally, to the right, a cosy sunrise scene, as viewed from a cliff, featuring a log bathed in the glow of a nearby campfire and a sailboat fishing in the distance, a colourful sky lit up just behind.
Throughout the mural, you may notice the subtle references to some of our favourite childhood shows and stories such as “Adventure Time” and “The Jungle Book”, which we hope that the children will find joy in too. Look closer and you may even find a green worm or two scattered around the mural, peeking through the grass or hiding under a log in a “Where’s Wally?” type game.
We have thoroughly enjoyed the journey of painting this mural and now, it is time that we open up this adventure for you and the children of the BIS Early Years and Infant Campus to enjoy as well. Though we are proud of the aesthetic value that the mural holds, we also hope that its value extends beyond just being pleasing to the eye. We hope that it can open the door to the children’s imaginations, that it holds with it the power to make them feel as if they have been transported to a whole other world – one where anything and everything is possible.
