The world we live in today will certainly not be the same as it will be in 10 years’ time and indeed it is not the same as it was 10 years ago. How a school decides which curriculum content and skills to teach is therefore extremely important. Here at BIS HCMC we choose a curriculum that closely links to the UK but also places a strong emphasis on our mission statement and teaching our core values with skills that all children will need in the future.
When considering the skills that children will need in their future lives, ‘critical thinking’ is always near the top of the list. So that teachers are able to explicitly teach critical thinking and teamwork, all teachers at the Junior Campus received additional training in a cognitive acceleration programme called ‘Let’s Think In English’. Please see Ms Shaheena’s recent post for more details about the week of training for teachers.
At BIS HCMC this programme begins with the Year 3 primary students and this week the children experienced their first lessons. It takes a lot of practise for the children to learn how to work as a team and how to successfully debate and argue with each other. All the children have enjoyed the lessons and eagerly await their next lesson. If you would like to help stimulate critical thinking at home, engage your children in conversation and ask them to explain their thinking. Asking questions that start with ‘How do you know that…?’ Or ‘Why do you think that…’ is always a good start.
