Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 01/03/2019

Dear Parents,

Some tremendous student led events have themed the week just past…

Can you trust your memory?

How does the propeller area affect it’s thrust?

How does water content of glue affect its strength of stick?

How does music affect heart rate?

Just some of the many research questions posed by Year 8 scientists recently.

Well today was time to share their findings and discoveries following weeks of practical investigation. Parents, teachers, fellow students and members of the HCMC scientific community joined us at the Year 8 Science Fair to revel in the science on show - what  a great way to finish the week!

Student judges joined researchers from science based organisations

A quick glimpse at the unseen rehearsals for events reminds us of the often busy schedules our students manage … can you see the homework being done at on the violin?

Student led assemblies this week were entitled ‘Stop, Speak and Support’, this was the message from our Wellbeing team as they launched their positive relationships and anti-bullying campaign. This student led initiative is just one important way that our prefect team are working in partnership with teachers and the school leadership team. You can find out more in this week’s newsletter below.

Prefects deliver positive relationships assembly to their peers

Astronomy Masterclass for our Sixth Form Scientists

Mr Walter Gengel from the Astropeiler Stockert Radio Telescope and Victoria Fethke hosted an Astronomy Masterclass to enable BIS students to undertake hands-on research on topics at the frontline of science: dark matter and pulsars.

Victoria, Year 13 Physicist, was instrumental in bringing this exciting opportunity together for our students and said...

This was a very rewarding experience because it demonstrated, even as high school students it's possible for us to be involved in these exciting topics. Moreover, by learning about dark matter and pulsars, we realise just how much is still unknown about the universe but which, in the future, we could be part of uncovering.”

Great work Victoria - as an ambassador for the sciences you are already doing some influential work!

….and the visits from top educators and extraordinary learning continued with…

Mathematics Lecturer from the University of Waterloo visits our HL Maths Class

And this week our sixth form Higher Level mathematicians were also treated to a maths masterclass from University of Waterloo Lecturer Troy Vasiga. This has become a regular feature when Waterloo pay us a visit and much appreciated by our students:

Stop, Speak & Support Campaign from our Wellbeing Prefects

Expect to see more of the new Stop Speak Support logo around the campus and in our communications with you.

Be an upstander not  a bystander. - 2019 Wellbeing Prefect Team

At BIS Secondary Campus the student wellbeing team and student council work in partnership to help ensure our community creates effective conditions for all to flourish.

The 2019 Anti-Bullying Campaign forms a fundamental part of the students’ commitment to ensuring our community is characterised by positive relationships based on mutual respect.

Our Wellbeing Prefects launched the Stop, Speak and Support Campaign during this week’s morning assemblies.

World Book Day- Thursday 7th March

This coming Thursday, March 7th, is World Book Day 2019 and we will be celebrating all things reading related at BIS Secondary Campus.  Find out more from Ms Anita Curley, Secondary Library Teacher, about World Book Day and the NAE ‘One World, One Book’ reading initiative, which encourages us all to check out a copy of ‘The Breadwinner’ by Deborah Ellis.
All can join in our celebration and appreciation of literature at home by sharing favourite books and characters, by sharing the reading experiences that have impacted their lives, and, most importantly, by sharing the pure pleasure of reading.

Happy World Book Day to all!
