We are proud to be global citizens learning together at BIS and we enjoy celebrating the languages and cultures of all our students. Each term we focus on a new language and its derived culture. This year we have already learnt about Urdu and Italian and our current Language in Focus is Japanese. Across the school, we have been doing lots of wonderful activities to learn all about Japanese culture and language.
At the Early Years and Infant Campus, we launched our new language during a fun-filled assembly. We enjoyed watching some of our teachers take part in a Japanese sumo wrestling contest. There was a fabulous video of our Japanese students teaching us some useful words and phrases before we took part in a quiz to test our knowledge.
Our students were also able to try some delicious Japanese gyoza at snack time. They have also been interacting with our display board quiz on the second floor.
On the Junior Campus, we launched our new Language in Focus in style with a Japanese karaoke competition for our teachers in assembly which was judged by our Year 6 Japanese speakers. It was hilarious to watch the teachers trying to sing!
Our students are enjoying engaging with the fantastic display board near the canteen. Here they can test their knowledge of Japanese language and culture with the information and pictures on view and there’s a fun quiz to test yourself.
At both campuses, students and teachers have been greeting each other in Japanese in the morning and speaking to each other in Japanese at play times. Teachers are even taking the register in Japanese!
Japanese will continue to be celebrated at BIS Primary for the rest of this term before we look forward to a new language which will be selected early in Term 3.
To continue learning at home, please visit our Language in Focus blog where you can see all of our recent activities, videos and lots of interesting information about Japanese alongside our previously celebrated languages.
