For 8 BIS primary and secondary students involved in FOX Football, they recently had the exciting opportunity to head to Thailand for the Bangkok Supercup; one of Asia's top international youth football tournaments. Students Christian Gladchuk and Louis De Geer provide all the highlights from the tournament!
"This year's Bangkok Supercup was an absolutely fantastic experience! We came into Bangkok Supercup feeling confident after being undefeated in our league in Ho Chi Minh City.
On the first day, the U12A's came into the pitch cool, calm and ready for the first game against Anusorn. We won 4-3 with 2 goals from Louis De Geer and 2 goals from Christian Gladchuk. Then after a 1-hour break, we did our warm up and were ready to take on First Kick Academy, this game was a comfortable win winning 3-0 with 1 own goal and 2 goals from Wiktor Jurzak. After game 2 we had our lunch break for 2 hours and then it was time for game 3. Going into this game against PFA the team was rather confident but PFA outplayed us in most aspects of the game so we were unfortunate and lost 3-1. Our heads were down after that game and soon enough it was time for game 4, we needed a win to qualify for the cup, anything else meant we were in the plate. We were slow to start going down 1-0, after that we still were slow and they got another one so we were down 2-0 with 10 to 15 minutes left of the match. Then we all switched on and got a quick goal by Wiktor Jurzak, moments after that another goal from Anthony Dawson from EIS which tied up the score 2-2. Then we had a counter-attack, Anthony receives a lovely pass and passes the ball to Christian who scores making us take the lead 3-2. We were all hyped up with a lot of energy flowing through us all, then a questionable call was made in the final seconds of the game and a free kick was awarded against us. The free kick taker took it and blasted it over the wall and into the top of the middle of the goal. There is an old saying in football "if you don't score, they will" and that is exactly what happened to us. The whole team was so disappointed in this call but the referee didn't listen.
The next day we came in ready to win the plate, the first game we had was against the FOX Football U12B team. That game was a comfortable 2-0 win with 1 goal from Wiktor Jurzak and another from Anthony Dawson. After that, it was the semifinals, where we faced our toughest opponents yet. They had extremely long and powerful shots that we simply could not stop, as a result of this we took a loss and now were playing for the 3rd and 4th place playoffs. We came into this game not worried at all, Wiktor Jurzak scored 3 wonderful goals and Enzo Guillon from ISHCMC scored 1. And with this win, we were awarded 3rd place. This year we had 5 members from BIS Secondary playing, these were Louis De Geer, Wiktor Jurzak, Miller Rowlands, William Rankin and myself Christian Gladchuk, we also had 3 members from BIS Primary who were Lewis Menzies, Ethan Smither and Hugo Daumas-Snowball. Thank you to FOX Football for providing us with this fun experience!"
Well done to all the players and congratulations to the coaches. If you have any sporting experiences and would like to share them with the BIS community, please email Mr McLoughlin.
