Welcome back to all BIS families and staff for the academic year 2019-20!

I trust that you have had both a relaxing and peaceful holiday and that you and your children are ready for another year of exciting, challenging and fun learning that lies ahead.

I would like to extend an especially warm welcome to families who are new to our BIS, HCMC community this year. Many have already joined our orientation events to begin the process of getting to know us but please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions as you settle into your new school; it is so important to us that we can support you with your transition into our thriving community.

This year, once again, we have expanded our teaching and support staff at the Secondary Campus and I am very much looking forward to the new ideas and opportunities these staff will bring with them for our students. Please look out for the ‘Meet the Teacher’ articles in my weekly updates to get to know each of them.

All members of our BIS, HCMC staff are very much looking forward to working in partnership with you and your children over the next academic year and we look forward to seeing you on campus again soon at one of the many parent events you will find on our website calendar.

Overview of the week’s activities

Celebrating excellent examination results!

We begin 2019-20 in celebration of outstanding IGCSE and IBDP results once again.

Along with their families we are so proud of the achievements of our Graduating IB Class and our Year 11 IGCSE, now Year 12 students.

Their success has already opened up so many opportunities for their futures both here and overseas. We wish our graduates farewell with our warmest wishes as they move on to study at top universities across the globe and remind them all to keep in contact with us now as BIS Alumni.

The IB Diploma Programme is incredibly popular, as ever, and we have extended a welcome back to our largest number of IB students as they embark upon their Sixth Form experience and to continue their own BIS success story.

Exciting Facilities Improvements

Students returned to the new school year and new facilities throughout the Secondary Campus. I will be giving more details of each project in the coming weeks to share with you how they are improving the quality of teaching and learning and also the experience of being a BIS student. For now I am delighted to share some images of our new Bistro look and a glimpse of the new look sports changing rooms; both have been very popular with students.

Dr Miguel visits BIS:

Teenage Mental Health talk

To coincide with the launch of our new Wellbeing curriculum at BIS HCMC, we were delighted to welcome Dr Miguel de Seixas, a psychiatrist from Family Medical Practice Vietnam, to speak on the important topic of teenage mental health.

Dr Miguel trained in Cambridge and London and is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Prior to arriving in Ho Chi Minh City, he worked as a clinical teacher and undergraduate tutor for medical students in the School of Clinical Medicine of the University of Cambridge.

Dr Miguel spoke to our Year 8, Year 10 and Year 11 students about the importance of looking after their mental health and presented a range of different strategies they could adopt to be ‘mentally healthy.’ Drawing on research from the Medical Health Foundation UK, Dr Miguel outlined 10 practical ways in which our students can look after their mental health:

  • Talking about your feelings

  • Keeping active

  • Eating well

  • Avoiding alcohol and drugs

  • Keeping in touch with people

  • Asking for help

  • Taking a break

  • Doing something you’re good at

  • Accepting who you are

  • Caring for others

He also reinforced the message that good wellbeing has a positive impact on academic outcomes, a particularly important point for our Year 10 and Year 11 students on their IGCSE journey. He emphasised the importance of young people getting 8-10 hours of good quality sleep per night, an essential ingredient in cognitive development and recovery.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to further develop these themes over the next year with our students in the Wellbeing curriculum.

Sports CCAs for Term 1

PE and Sports - CCA | BIS HCMC

On the Secondary Campus, the BIS Sport teams will once again be following a seasonal format within our Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) programme.

This is designed to align with SISAC competition dates and to offer the best training potential for our students. As last year, each team will have two ‘in-season’ practices per week and when a sport is out of season, one practice per week.

See the full SISAC season calendar list and more information about the Sports Clubs for 2019-2020 here.
