Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 27/09/2019

Sean O
Sean O'Neill (58 posts) Head Teacher, Secondary Campus View Profile

The renowned publisher Malcolm Forbes once described diversity as being “the art of thinking independently together”. This week the Secondary Campus has been infused with opportunities that capture both aspects of that phrase in the many opportunities for independence and intentional teamwork. It is these characteristics that are the hallmark of the school culture here at BIS and we have enjoyed being able to share these with our BIS community and partners from across the region.

The week began with the sound of the wonderful FOBISIA Advanced Music Concert still echoing through the campus- a huge thanks to our Director of Music, Mr Ian Alexander, and the BIS Music Team, for leading such an enriching collaborative experience for all our guests from around Asia, and to our student participants for sharing with us their talent, energy and skill in a quite stunning concert performance.

We were joined on Monday by Year 8 Parents for the latest in our series of Open Mornings - it was fantastic to see so many parents touring the school, and observing the diversity of learning experiences that take place everyday here at BIS. It is through these strong effective partnerships between parents and our team in school that the foundations for student success are built. Nowhere is this partnership more important than in shaping the direction our students will take as they take the next steps to IB Diploma studies and university pathways. It was therefore extremely pleasing to see another hugely well attended IB Options Evening on Thursday where our parents, students and teachers came together to engage in thinking about each student’s unique journey to their chosen future.

There are many more opportunities for community collaboration in the coming weeks from the BBGV Fun Run, and Year 9 and Key Stage 5 Open Mornings, to our International Day 2019 to name but a few. We look forward to seeing you at these events which enable our diverse community to work together.

I hope you enjoy reading more details of another busy week on our campus and wish you all  a restful weekend.

Sean O’Neill

Deputy Headteacher.

What Can Drama Do for you? Parent Workshop

This week the Drama department were excited to welcome parents to a workshop that explored what we deliver in the Drama curriculum at BIS, and why it is so important to the student experience at BIS. The parent participants were led through a series of exercises by our Head of Drama, Mrs Molloy that enabled them to experience some of the elements that their children are being taught. Everyone was nervous at the beginning, but the collaborative, risk taking and creative nature of a drama classroom meant that by the end there was laughter and understanding. Thank you to the parents who were brave enough to come and join us, we hope that you had fun, and that we will see you and even more parents next time.

Over the years, over 110,000 runners and walkers have taken part. The Fun Run is an excellent team building opportunity for companies or a great day out with families and friends.
