Developing stand-out university applicants for international study

It is essential that students have the opportunity to explore their potential and recognise their individual skills to fully understand what they want to do next in life. Whilst many schools may have an individual guidance counsellor, BIS HCMC employs a full department of experts to help with the process. Our College and University Guidance Department provide students and parents with the information, support and guidance they need to make informed decisions about universities and careers.

When our students are considering university subjects, they are guided by our teachers who have studied all over the world. Having teachers who are not only experienced and skilled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), but who also have a lived experience of what quality university study is like ensures our students receive a level of insight they may not elsewhere. 

Top universities ask for more than great grades from prospective students. Our teachers are experts in helping our students to build competitive university applications by encouraging them to explore their interests and hobbies beyond the classroom. From the lower school years through to Year 12 and 13, our teachers proactively encourage students to pursue Co-Curricular activities which will make all of the difference when it comes to applying for university. 

Our teachers have not only attended universities around the world, many have also taught in a variety of international schools. Collectively, they have experience of application systems and subject criteria for universities in many different countries, including significant experience in the UK. 

Understanding the application system and preparing to impress

It is not uncommon for our students to apply to a selection of universities in numerous countries. Popular destinations include anywhere from the UK and America, to Canada and South Korea. This ideally gives students a number of options when it comes to choosing their university destination, but it also requires them to navigate a variety of application systems for which the requirements and structure may vary significantly between countries. 

As well as providing a new challenge to students, the application process is often unfamiliar to families too. The College and University Guidance Department plays a key part in guiding students and parents through this. They have experience and knowledge of international application processes and are equipped to steer students through this system, ensuring that they are prepared rather than overwhelmed by the challenge.

The written application process is typically only the first step in securing a place at a top university. At this stage and beyond it, our specialist team is an ally for students and ensures they are prepared for each of the challenges presented. From writing references and recommendation letters, providing feedback on applications, and holding practice interviews which are appropriate to the university and country in consideration, our team helps every student to put their best foot forward and to have a clear understanding of what is required of them to produce a successful application.

Student Wellbeing

We recognise that our students have big ambitions and as a result are often tasked with numerous challenges to focus on simultaneously, but where the challenges are high so is the support that we put in place. In Year 13 particularly, students will meet a variety of demands. In Term 1, students of the IBDP will have deadlines, the completion of their extended essay and completion of their Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) commitments. This is also when the majority of university applications take place, many of which are very time consuming - a typical application to a US university takes 15-20 hours, for example. 

The combination of workload and applying to university is the most demanding task students will have faced in the academic journey to date. Paying close attention to student wellbeing and their handling of these commitments is a top priority during this process. Our school takes a holistic view of everything students are juggling and helps them to understand and prepare in advance for what the demands of university applications are, where they fall in the school year so they can manage their time effectively, and know the support available to them to ensure they succeed.
