Every day matters: why attendance, wellbeing and success go hand in hand

At Regents International School Pattaya, we believe that success is about much more than grades. It is about helping every child develop the confidence, character, relationships and skills they need to thrive both in school and in life.
This belief is at the heart of our Every Day Matters philosophy, which highlights the powerful link between attendance, wellbeing and student success. While attendance is often viewed as a number or percentage, we see it as something much more meaningful: a pathway to connection, engagement and growth.
The power of being present
Every day at school brings opportunities to learn, build friendships, participate in experiences and develop important life skills. Consistent attendance enables students to access the relationships, routines and challenges that support their personal and academic development.
Our philosophy is simple: Being here → Belonging → Engaging → Growing → Thriving
When students attend school regularly, they are more likely to feel connected to their peers and teachers. That sense of belonging creates engagement, which in turn supports learning, confidence and wellbeing.
As Tamika Daley-Bacchus, Head of Primary, explains:
"Children flourish when they feel connected, valued and involved in school life. Every day in school provides opportunities to build friendships, develop confidence and engage with learning. Consistent attendance helps create the routines and sense of belonging that allow children to thrive."
Small absences can add up
It is easy to think that missing a few days of school has little impact. However, over the course of a school year, occasional absences can quickly become significant lost learning time.
Based on a 190-day school year:
97% attendance equals approximately 6 days or 48 lessons missed
95% attendance equals approximately 10 days or 80 lessons missed
90% attendance equals approximately 19 daysor 152 lessons missed
Importantly, attendance is not about blame or judgement. Instead, it helps schools identify patterns, understand barriers and provide support when needed. We recognise that children will sometimes need to be absent due to illness or other circumstances. Our focus is on working in partnership with families when patterns of absence begin to affect a child's connection, wellbeing or learning.
Wellbeing matters too
Attendance and wellbeing are closely connected. Changes in attendance, punctuality or engagement can sometimes be an early indicator that a child may need additional support.
Families and schools might notice:
Reluctance to attend school
Changes in friendship groups
Tiredness or disrupted routines
Increased lateness
Reduced engagement in learning
Changes in behaviour or presentation
At Regents, our approach is proactive: Notice. Understand. Support. Review.
This means we do not wait for a challenge to become a significant problem before taking action. By identifying concerns early and working together with families, we can provide the right support at the right time.
As Dale Jackson, Head of Secondary, explains:
"Attendance data is about people, not percentages. If we notice a change in attendance, punctuality or engagement, our first step is to understand what may be behind it. Open communication between school and home allows us to work together to support students and ensure they remain connected to learning and school life."
More than academic Success
Every day at school contributes to the development of the skills and attributes that help students succeed long after they leave the classroom. Regents' educational philosophy emphasises the development of the 6Cs:
Curiosity
Creativity
Critical Thinking
Collaboration
Commitment
Compassion
These qualities are developed through participation in lessons, sports, performing arts, leadership opportunities, service activities and everyday interactions with others. Regular attendance ensures students can fully benefit from these experiences and continue building the capabilities needed for future success.
Why punctuality matters
Attendance is only part of the picture. Arriving on time helps students begin the day calm, prepared and ready to learn.
Punctuality supports the development of important habits including organisation, self-discipline, responsibility and respect for others. It also helps students start the day feeling settled rather than rushed.
Simple strategies can make a big difference:
Prepare bags and equipment the night before
Maintain consistent sleep routines
Allow extra time for the journey to school
Create calm and predictable morning routines
As Aristotle famously observed, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." Consistent attendance and punctuality are habits that help set students up for success.
A shared responsibility
The strongest outcomes for children come when schools and families work in partnership. By maintaining positive routines, communicating concerns early and supporting regular attendance, we create the conditions for every child to succeed.
At Regents, our shared goal is simple: Students who are present, connected and ready to thrive.
Because every day matters. And every child matters.
