How has St Andrews prepared you for university?

St Andrews has provided me with a solid foundation that has equipped me for university by instilling independence, self-discipline, and the ability to rise to new challenges. My 14 years at STA are coming to a close, but I want to express my gratitude to Ms Alyssa, my university counsellor, who has provided me with support, valuable advice and assistance through the research and application process for university.

What have you learned from Senior Studies?

The rigorous academic curriculum of the IB encouraged me to think critically and approach problems from multiple perspectives. Through challenging assignments and projects, I learned how to analyse information, evaluate arguments, and draw evidence-based conclusions. The program's emphasis on collaborative work, such as group projects and presentations, enhanced my teamwork skills as I learned to effectively communicate and cooperate with my peers.

Furthermore, the demanding workload of the IB necessitated effective time management. Balancing multiple subjects, assignments, and extracurricular activities taught me to prioritise tasks, set deadlines, and efficiently allocate my time. These skills acquired through the IB have not only prepared me for university but also equipped me with valuable life skills that will benefit me in various academic and professional endeavours.

Your plans for university or after graduation?

My university plans for after graduation consist of studying Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE) at the University of Amsterdam. To receive this offer, I had to get through several rounds of admissions such as an essay, a financial and study plan, a test and an interview, which results in only 200 applicants being selected amongst the thousands of applications. With my fortunate opportunity, I aim to delve deep into the intricacies of these disciplines and develop a well-rounded perspective to address pressing global challenges.

Favourite memory from STA?

The lifelong friendships I have made during my 14 years at STA will always be my best memory. Additionally, going on trips with classmates to various destinations, such as Brunei with the STA Marlins for the swimming Fobisia, Japan for a STA ski trip and all of the annual residentials.

Any advice for students going into IB or Year 12s?

The best piece of advice I can offer someone who is about to start their IB journey or is in year 12, would be to manage your time wisely as cramming work last minute will not do you any good in the short or long run. Just remember to balance both your social and academic life in order to get through IB successfully.
