Reflecting on Term 2

Dear Parents,

I hope that many of you were able to join the live streaming of the Principal’s Award Assembly today.

When collating information to celebrate the achievements of our students, it is always a challenge to represent a good overview of our busy life within the BIS community in one assembly. We always enjoy an incredible array of activities and events and despite our school currently being closed for students, this term was no exception!

At the start of Term 2, we celebrated Tet with a colourful event in the Auditorium. This was the last time we were altogether as a community until our virtual meeting in the auditorium today. Following the Tet holidays, our teachers returned to face life without classrooms full of children.  The staff at BIS embarked on a learning curve as professionals which took us from the realms of e-learning to the creation of our virtual school. Reminding ourselves of those first steps by watching our teachers and teaching assistants singing our new e-learning song was a pleasure this morning. You can watch the song again below.

The variety of learning which now takes place through our virtual school is tremendous. Mrs Carroll celebrated the learning within our EAL department, as a number of students have successfully moved from tier to tier within our EAL programme and others have graduated from the support altogether. We also saw a selection of photos showing children from Primary learning through cookery, exploration, hands-on maths activities, collaboration on global topics and using the materials within the Foundation Stage ‘curiosity boxes’.

Mr Webb also celebrated Secondary achievements this term, referring to students who had only joined in term 2 however were already proving themselves to be adapting to a new school during challenging times.

Principals Awards Assembly

A musical interlude to this morning’s assembly gave a brief synopsis of our students practicing and performing on their preferred instruments in their own homes, ranging from cello to flute and piano to voice. In addition, a showcase of artwork completed during our virtual school showed tremendous talent. Well done everyone!

The Principal’s Award winners really were deserving of their accolades. The 16 students, one per year group, were selected by teachers for demonstrating the BIS values of care, integrity, perseverance, reflection, respect and enquiry. Many of the teachers’ comments reflected the individual’s commitments to working positively and setting excellent working habits during full participation with our virtual school. Congratulations to all recipients. Your Principal’s Award trophy will be delivered to your individual homes on Monday.

Principals Awards Assembly

I would like to mention a couple of highlights for me personally this week, which I referred to in this morning’s assembly. Firstly, the chance to interview Year 12 students who had applied to be Head Girl and Head Boy for the next academic year. Our current Head Boy and Head Girl, Tien and Valerie, were involved in the selection process as they took part in the interviewing panel. The final decision was an extremely hard one and I would like to thank all those who took the time to apply for the post. Congratulation however to the successful students, Ha Minh and Nacho. I’m sorry to say that the sound quality did not do justice to their short introduction during the assembly however we will share their video with our community so that you can hear their comments better.

My second highlight was when I joined a creative collaborative Performing Arts day for Year 6. Lead by Ms. Bevan, the students enthusiastically engaged in dance, drama and song around the story of Oliver Twist. This fun project will be mirrored across Primary over the coming weeks and helps students to engage away from the computer.

In summary, Term 2 has certainly looked different to other terms at BIS however we still have so much to celebrate! At the beginning of the year, we introduced our newly created STEAM room and talked about how skills needed for the future could be developed through our flexible learning areas. Creativity, collaboration and adaptability have certainly been reinforced through our new way of working in our virtual school. I have been so impressed by how our students have adapted and creatively ensured that collaboration takes place. I have seen amazing examples of how students have solved problems through the use of various technologies. The skills we have acquired through school closure will certainly stand us in good stead for the future.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend.
