Letter from the Head of Primary - 5th May 2016

On Tuesday morning many of us were in school a little earlier than normal, in order to wave off our Year 4 and Year 5 students who were heading off on their respective residentials; Year 4 to Oriental Land and Year 5 to Lohas Island. Whilst these two locations are not far from home, for some of our students this is the first time they will have been away from their families for three consecutive nights, and there were some nervous students (and parents) on Tuesday morning. I am pleased to report that both groups of students and teachers are having a superb time and have been uploading lots of pictures that we back at school are all very jealous of. I have seen examples of kite flying and dragon boat racing, archery and canoeing. Feelings of homesickness have very quickly dispersed, once the students have realised how much fun they can have away from home, with their peers! We can’t wait to hear all about their adventures when they return on Friday afternoon.

Back at school I have been working with the remaining Year 4 and Year 5 students and we have been tasked with a project to prepare a pack for new students who join our school. We had a look at the information that is normally given out to our prospective families and decided we should include more child-friendly information to help new students settle into school and share our experiences with them. The students have produced some excellent work this week, with not only myself but Mr Smith and Mrs Hughes too, and we plan to include this in our Admissions materials for new students who join our school.

Linked to the start of a new school year, I would like to remind parents that we are unable to take requests for specific class teachers for the following year. It is essential that we treat all our families fairly and, as such, it would not be possible to give all parents their choice of class teacher. Added to the fact that there are a number of logistical requirements we also need to take into account such as balancing the number of boys and girls; nationalities; students who require language or learning support as well as new and returning students. We will ensure each child is placed in a class with at least one of their friends and that they are placed in a class where they will be supported and encouraged to achieve the very best they can. We will be welcoming several new teachers to our school next year and I know they are very much looking forward to joining our team and working with our students. We will begin organising our classes for next year once we have a firmer idea of those students who will be returning next year; therefore, please do let our Admissions team know of your intentions if you haven’t already.
