Principal's Message - 10th June 2016

10 六月 2016

Whilst the week has moved quite swiftly on, somehow lengthened by the joys of a public holiday in the mix, I can’t write this newsletter without first acknowledging what an amazing day last Saturday’s Summer Fun Day was. It truly was a great family fun day and huge thanks must go to our Community Group, particular Chairperson Jody Dexter, Vice Chair Heike Springmann and too many others to name for the vast amount of time spent organizing such a great event. Standing in the torrential rain on Friday evening, the team stayed steadfast that the field would drain and the sun would shine, and a little bit of luck was with us as it turned out glorious.  Fingers crossed the rain stays away as Year 3 take to the field tonight for their first residential experience, a night away from parents camping in the school grounds.

We also had the pleasure of meeting one of our new members of staff joining the Secondary team last week, when Parras Majithia spent his half term holiday coming for a visit to ensure a smooth handover when he starts his new role as Business and Economics teacher in August. Mr Majithia is an experienced school leader in the UK with extensive experience in teaching Economics and Business.  He has also graduated with an Economics and Law degree and he has since completed his masters in educational leadership. In previous roles he has also led on IT initiatives and assessment strategies.  Already almost settled into the school he looks forward to joining Mrs Brunskill and Mr Gichana in this popular department in secondary.

Also joining the secondary team is Mrs Salam Flood, who will be taking over Mrs Ford’s German classes.  Mrs Flood is an exceptionally talented teacher who speaks a wide array of languages, completely bilingual in German and Arabic with years of experience in the UK, she also has a passion for performing arts and looks forward to supporting future productions.

As many know Mr Dawson moves to our sister school in Madrid and closer to his home.  Replacing him is Mr. Daniel Guireny, who joins us from Egypt. Mr. Guirney is an exceptionally experienced IB teacher who comes highly recommended from one of our previous teachers, Mr. Charles Uddin, and who have worked together before. Mr Guirney and his family look forward to returning to Asia and making Shanghai their home.

Finally we have much to look forward to next week, including Julliard’s Head of Keyboards coming to perform and host a series of demonstration lessons and masterclasses, the much anticipated Horrible Histories junior school production and the CISSA Sports awards.  Please make sure you check our WeChat and website messages to see what is going on each day.  No doubt Year 11 parents have Friday 17th June marked in bold print as the exams finally come to an end and the students celebrate in style with a family party. Sadly celebrating the start of a new journey will be Ms Jen Tyrell, our Director of Marketing and Admissions, who relocates home to Australia with her husband next week. We thank Jen for all her hard work and support for community events and the care with which many new families will know that Jen showed in welcoming you into Shanghai. Replacing Jen is Ms Sonia Dixon who will be introduced to the Community Group next week.
