An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

Information and Reminders

Year 6 students have been very quick to settle in, as almost all are returning from Year 5. We welcome Lauren Tsoi into Mr. Finan’s class, 6A. We hope all students have enjoyed their first week back at school.

As you may already be aware, our Project Week destination this year is Shaolin. This year’s project will be learning about the Shaolin Monks living at the monestry; the trip will also involve other activities such as tutoring and learning from children at a nearby orphanage. Much more information will be available at the Meet and Greet event: details of the timings of presentations will follow.

We have started a unit about story genres. Children will be exploring short stories in genres such as adventure, traditional tales, and science fiction. We will be analysing the structure of a traditional tale called ‘The Glass Cupboard’ from an anthology called ‘Fantastic, Funny, Frightening’. Students will focus on the passage of time within the narrative structure and how this contributes to the audience’s experience of the genre.

Our guided reading sessions will be based on the Clive King novel ‘Stig of the Dump’. We aim to read to the end of Chapter 2, at which point we begin to learn more about the personality of Stig, who the protagonist Barney meets in a disused chalk pit. Students will be asked to discuss their developing relationship to better understand character.



We will continue to learn mathematics in regular class groups, moving on from place value work into the strand of ‘Measure’, in which we will be using apparatus like rulers and tape measures to measure objects to a high degree of accuracy. Students will be asked to estimate the size of objects around the classroom, then measure to within 1mm accuracy.

We will build upon this by combining with a recap of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000 when we practise converting between units of measurement (e.g. cm to mm, m to cm, etc.)



In topic lessons, we will continue to explore the Ancient Mayan civilisation, including their customs, architecture, and roles which existed within Mayan society.

Students will be researching some notable locations around Mesoamerica to learn more about the structure of Mayan settlements and the role and function of public buildings. They will record their findings and share with the class.

Some topic vocabulary which we will be using includes: artefact, archaeology, architecture, civilisation, culture, customs, domestication, empire, rituals.
