An overview of the week ahead in Reception

  • Reception children investigate growth

Information and Reminders

If you have not yet booked an appointment to visit your child’s teacher during our Academic Review Evenings, you can do so on the online booking system. If you have any problems with this, please contact your child’s class teacher directly.

We have now changed to our summer uniform. Please refer to our website or your child’s Learning Journal to check the appropriate clothing. You can visit our uniform shop to buy any items you may need.

Kindly ensure that items of clothing have your child’s name written inside. If an item of clothing is misplaced or another child has put it on by mistake, this helps us to easily rectify the situation.

Please could you ensure that your child brings a plastic water bottle to school. Hot water is not permitted and the metal flask bottles are very heavy. These bottles pose a hazard if they are dropped and are not permitted in the setting for health and safety reasons. Thank you for understanding.

Overview of Learning

This week we have been exploring the measurement of weight using balance scales and the children have been using words such as heavier and lighter to compare. Next week we will be revisiting money, which will support the children when accessing the role play shop and will enable the children to apply their knowledge of addition and subtraction in a meaningful context. This week the children have been introduced to the story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’. The children have been exploring vegetables that grow under the ground and the concept of growth. Using a story map and small world role play the children have been orally retelling the story using actions. Next week we will continue to focus on the story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’ and the children will be creating their own story maps, thinking carefully about the characters in the story and the sequence of the story. We will continue to explore the concept of growth by planting some seeds and looking at the different parts of a plant.
