Mr Rossi and his Year 7 class demonstrating the fuedal system!
You started at BISS Puxi in August, what have you enjoyed the most about working here so far? I have particularly enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere working at BISS Puxi, and the warm welcome that was extended to all new staff at the beginning of term was much appreciated. I have also enjoyed teaching so many different nationalities and it has been extremely enlightening for me to get the wider European and Asian perspective on our ‘great’ British history.
What do you like to do in Shanghai at the weekends? With so much weekday time devoted to teaching and preparation, the weekend is definitely a time for rest and relaxation. While I have enjoyed sampling the local cuisine I have also been able to find several excellent Italian restaurants where I can indulge my passion for pizza and pasta. The weekend also gives me the opportunity to keep fit by jogging, cycling and walking.
What about living in China has surprised you the most? The most surprising thing I have found about living in China is peoples’ perception of the weather, in summer they complain that it is too hot and in winter they complain that it’s too cold! I love the summer heat in Shanghai and so far the winter has been relatively mild in comparison to my home city, Belfast.
What is your favourite thing to teach in History? I have a great passion for all things Italian so I am particularly enjoying teaching the IB module on Mussolini’s Fascist Regime in Italy. However, I am also looking forward to learning more about Chinese history through my teaching.
Who is your favourite character from history? There are so many exceptional individuals in history that it is difficult to choose. However, if pushed I would probably choose Leonardo Da Vinci and I am very much looking forward to visiting his birth place when I am travelling in Italy next summer – that will be one more ambition fulfilled.
Where are you from and what do you miss most from home? My family are originally from Italy but I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I miss the simple things that we all take for granted, family (including my cat Aoife) and friends… and possibly fresh milk for my tea and Corn Flakes!
