Dear Parents,

It is sometimes a bit tricky to find benefits of our current situation but every day I benefit from lessons that I would not normally see, and certainly not on such a regular basis.

Every single day I am reminded of our staff’s creativity and inspiration to our students as music lesson after music lesson takes place outside my office, under the cover of the school entrance. The music, and sometimes dance, that I am treated too is completely uplifting. I often do think that it would be wonderful to hear this music around school in different locations more, even when we are fully back in school.

The variety of learning across the year groups is brilliant, and I can in one lesson be listening to a traditional Brazilian playground song, and in the next enjoy some very modern music by ‘Of Monsters and Men’, accompanied on different instruments. I have always been a fan of the Ukulele, so it is wonderful to see its prominence in much of the musical notation being learnt. The children are learning so many different skills, and most importantly a great appreciation of music.

A few weeks ago, I was also a judge for the BCB KS1 Has Got Talent show. The winners from each class performed and then were critiqued by celebrity judges. (Miss Price, Miss Delestree, Mr McDaniel and me) The show was broadcast live on YouTube for the first time, trialled by Ms Bechara and her co-host Mr Santos. This was a fantastic event and just another opportunity for our students to enjoy and excel in the arts.

I must wholeheartedly thank each and every member of our music department who so thoroughly keep me entertained on a daily basis, and of course keep the children engaged in their learning.

In a few weeks’ time, our whole department of teachers of the arts, across the whole school, will engage the students in a ‘Week of the Arts’. This will give us a chance to try lots of new and different things in and out of lessons, at lunch and breaks and of course sometimes at home. They are busy preparing activities for everyone to enjoy and of course it also gives us a chance to celebrate and launch being part of the Juilliard collaboration with Nord Anglia. More excitement to come, please watch out for information…

Have a lovely weekend and of course stay safe and socially responsible.
