Year 5 have just returned from a visit to the Vietnam Waste Solutions Facility, where they have learned all about waste in Vietnam. The trip links with the Year 5 IPC unit, Sustainability.

Our Year 5 children today went to visit the Vietnam Waste Solutions Facility in the Binh Chanh district of the city. Linked to their IPC work on sustainability, the children learnt about what happens to the rubbish once it leaves their homes.

They found out about the effects that modern companies are having on the city due to the increased amount of litter created, and heard about the plans for the future. The waste facility was established to develop and operate solid waste management and treatment facilities, including a landfill, recycling and composting facilities, water treatment facilities and waste collection services.

The students were amazed to hear that the largest man-made item in the entire world is in fact a landfill! Jeorgia quoted “I feel extremely disappointed and even scared by this fact”. The children had a great time and asked lots of interesting questions. Their feedback was very positive, including comments such as “I learned so many facts” (Yegor), “It was amazing” (William) and “It was great to see the work they are doing” (Lily).

Ms Hong Anh, one of our Year 5 TAs, also couldn’t believe some of the information she heard “I was so surprised to hear about all of the amazing things they are doing. It is great for a big city like this and we are all extremely appreciative”. Well done Year 5! To find out more about the centre, visit www.vnwaste.com.
