BIS HCMC students named top scorers in IGCSE examinations Students from the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City achieve top IGCSE results in Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards.

In August we announced the exceptional results achieved by our international secondary students in their Cambridge IGCSE examinations.

We saw 100% of students here at the British International School Ho Chi Minh City achieving 5 or more passes at grades A* - C and 68% of all grades at A* or A. This placed our students at three times the UK national average for 2018 securing BIS Vietnam’s position as one of the best international schools in Asia.

We can now reveal that our students are excelling once more, as 15 BIS students received prestigious awards from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) to acknowledge their outstanding performance in the Summer 2018 IGCSE Cambridge examination series.

The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards celebrate the success of learners taking Cambridge examinations in over 40 countries around the world. Cambridge places learners at the centre of their international education programmes and qualifications which are inspired by the best in educational thinking.

With 3 awards for High Achievement going to Isaure Echivard (First Language French), Ines De Almeida (First Language Portuguese) and Cheng Ting-Chih (Foreign Language Spanish), the remaining 12 students received the ‘Top in Country’ award, referring to the learners who gained the highest standard mark in Vietnam for a single subject.

Our sincere congratulations go out to all students who received these esteemed awards. Being recognised as the highest achieving students in Vietnam is a testament to not only the hard work and aptitude of the students here at the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City but the continued support offered by their parents and our dedicated teachers.

We spoke to some of our award-winning students on how it felt to receive this prestigious award:

“I felt surprise and accomplishment knowing that I did well in my favourite subject. I was so overjoyed that my heart wanted to exploded.” – Aina Solis

“I was very surprised when I found out that I achieved top in the country however, I felt very rewarded as I spent a lot of time on my coursework and I intricately learnt the exam structure.” – Anna Merlin

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum provides students with the opportunity to choose courses that they are passionate about. This reinforces the process of them becoming independent learners and thinkers, and they start to take responsibility for their own education.

Anna Merlin has always had an interest in creative subjects and by following her passion and studying Design & Technology she now holds the highest score in Vietnam.

“I was interested in the creative side of DT as I really enjoy creative subjects. I was also interested by the subject because we were designing and producing for a purpose. Everything we were learning and making had a use and products were suited to specific users. I also enjoyed the freedom we had for our coursework. We could pick any subject which we were passionate about, the design and final product was completely up to us.”

Success across STEAM subjects

STEAM subjects include Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics and play an invaluable part in helping students to develop academic, social and personal success. As the changes in science and technology continue to gather pace, our aim here at BIS HCMC is to nurture the skills students need to succeed in an unknown world.

Mr James Chandler, STEAM Co-ordinator at BIS HCMC comments on the success of our students across the STEAM subjects in the IGCSE examinations;

“Congratulations to all of our students, especially for the fantastic results across the STEAM subjects as it is exciting to know that our students are taking great steps to be able to tackle the global challenges that we are facing within the 21st century.”

He goes on to say,

“At BIS we know that solving problems is an inter-disciplinary and multi-dimensional endeavour involving critical thinking, collaboration, communication and reflection, and therefore I am proud to be teaching at an international school that recognises the importance of all of the STEAM disciplines along with developing the skills to apply them. I wish our students all the best for their future and look forward to reading about the future impacts that I am sure they will have on the world.”
