Roald Dahl

Last week in the Junior library we celebrated the popular author Roald Dahl’s birthday, which is September 13! The students in Years 3 to 6 learnt about the life of Roald Dahl, from his birth in 1916 in Llandaff, Wales, to his death on November 23, 1990. Roald Dahl was a British novelist, short-story writer, poet, screenwriter, a chocolate historian, a medical inventor, a spy and wartime fighter pilot. His books have sold more than 250 million copies worldwide. Dahl was born in Wales to Norwegian immigrant parents. He served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.

We looked at all of the titles of his books which he wrote for children, and which we have in our school library, including his fiction stories, his auto-biographies and biography, which was written by Michael Rosen. The students were motivated to read Roald Dahl’s books and many were borrowed from the library last week.

During the lunchtime break the students watched ‘The BFG’ and ‘Matilda’ movies which were showing in the library!

The highlight of the week was the finding of the ‘Golden Tickets’, which were hidden in books around the library. They were books that hadn’t been read for a while. Then the students borrowed and read the book that they found the golden ticket in. The students were very excited when they found a ‘Golden Ticket’, just like Charlie in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’! They received a small prize and house points if they found a ‘Golden Ticket!
