UNIS Hanoi Swim Meet

Sports Update - 11th November - Sports Update - 11th November

Last Friday, 40 swimmers across primary and secondary, travelled to Hanoi for the UNIS Invitational Swim Meet, the first time since 2019, that this event has taken place.  Our team returned, triumphant on Sunday evening, struggling under the weight of the medals and trophies they earned.

There were 19 schools competing in the meet in which 17 schools from across Viet Nam, one school from Laos, and another one from South Korea.  BIS Barracudas scored the most points, finishing 1st overall with a total of 1941 points from 60 events, which was 11 points more than the host school-UNIS, standing second Place with 1930 points. This is an outstanding achievement for BIS, especially gaining more points than a host school. Each BIS swimmer took part in 5 individual events and 2 relay events. We finished the meet in with 144 medals: 57 gold, 47 silver, and 40 bronze.  Four first place team trophies went to the 8 and Under Girls and Boys, 9-10 Boys, and 11-12 Girls.A special mention and well-done to Bei Bei Tse and Raoul Guglielmi – Champions of 8 and Under Girls and Boys, winning 6 gold medals each, Nathan Tran the 9 -10 Boys Champion winning 6 gold medals and a bronze and Sao Mai Pham, 11 - 12 Girls Champion.

A huge thank you to our supporting parents who were an essential part in the BIS team supervision, organization, and motivation during the meet. We are very proud of our swimmers, they all demonstrated sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork and organization. We are looking forward to seeing that again in our upcoming Secondary City Championship at ISHCMC, and Feeding Frenzy Meet in Thailand in December.

Primary Sports Update

Finally, Yesterday, our Cross Country Runners travelled to District 7 to take part in Saigon Cross Country finals. They too, did a magnificent job and came back proudly with their own top podium finish. More information in the Sports Round up below.

What a fantastic week of sport, we saw 5 football teams head out to compete in the U11 SISAC City Championships, at various different venues. The BIS values shone through in all teams, with fun, sportsmanship and determination being the overriding comments from all coaches.

U9-U11 SISAC Cross-Country

20 Children took part in the SISAC Cross-country championship for the U9 and U11 age groups on Thursday, held at AISVN. The temperatures were high but that didn't stop our children running with everything they had!

Special mentions to Bay (1st), Raoul (2nd), Sofia (2nd) and Atsu (2nd). All the runners placed highly and as a group we came away as SISAC PRIMARY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS! Well done to all involved.

Ms Ann

U11 Boys A Team

With a clean sheet in the elimination round, BIS beat ISHCMC in the semis with a score of 3-0 (Pen) and marched on to the finals to a 6-2 victory against AISVN.

It was a successful campaign for the team in this season, having won all their matches from friendlies and all the games in the City Championship.

Cedric, Nemo, Shota, Bay, Jack E., Hung Le, Hai Dinh, Yat Hei, Noah, Jack C. and Atsu made up the BIS Team A this year.

U11 Boys B and C Team

The U11 Boys' B football team competed in the City Championships this week in a fantastic display of school sport. The Championships are the culmination of ten weeks of hard work from the team, who have enjoyed an incredible journey together. With saves worthy of the Premier League from Jamie in goal, world class finishes from Lucas, Ian and Henry, to fearsome defending from Sean and Gethin. It has been a season to remember, and every student who supported the team's success should take great pride in their performances. Our boys in team C are brilliant. We won 2 games, lost 1 and draw 1 to finish 5th of 7 teams. They got a lot of experiences and spent one good time to play together.

Mr Iain and Mr Dinh

U11 Girls A Team

The Girls A team took part in the SISAC City Championships this year hosted at ISHCMC. In the finals were BIS, ISHCMC, RISS and SSIS. All schools with a very good footballing background!BIS started the tournament off with a fantastic win against RISS 2 – 0 with goals coming from Aoy and Beigo.

Against ISHCMC we had 90% of the ball and created several chances, however the girls could not convert! ISHCMC scored with basically the last kick of the game. This left us second in the table and needing to beat SSIS to get into the final. The girls lined up against SSIS, determined to win. This was shown in their play with some fantastic passing moves setting up a wonderful goal from Myeisha! A volley from outside the box that just bounced over the goal line! 1- 0!

This put us in the final against ISHCMC. Again, we dominated the game in the first half. However, after the break, Hoai An and Ariana had to defend resolutely. With Yu An having to make a key save in goal. This match then went to penalties.  Unfortunately, ISHCMC on this occasion were the victor beating BIS on penalties 3 -1.

The girls were an absolute pleasure to take to this tournament, their behaviour and attitude was exemplary and they should be enormously proud to say they are the Second best in the City! That is some achievement, seeing as some of the girls in the team have only just started playing football!

U11 Girls B Team

The Girls B team took part in the SISAC tournament over at ABC School. At the tournament were BIS, ISHCMC, BVIS and ABC. In our first game we played ISHCMC. When we played them a few weeks ago they beat us 2 – 0. Today the girls played very hard in the heat and made a few chances to score. Unfortunately, one mistake cost us a goal. 1-0 loss.

In our second game we played ABC School. We made many chances with Minseo making 3 good shots. All unfortunately for us, saved by the goalie! This game finished 0 – 0. With All the girls defending very well.

Our last game was against BVIS who had a couple of very strong players. We kept the score line here respectable 5 -0. Out of all the matches played today, I was most impressed by how they played verses BVIS. They worked incredibly hard and put in some very strong tackles to stop them from scoring more. They did not stop even after conceding the goals and showed real strength of character and determination.

Player of the match here goes to Lucy. She improved throughout the tournament and started to show some very nice skills. They were a credit to the School and represented BIS perfectly. Mr Rob, hosting the tournament, said how impressed he was us, and how unlucky we were not to score more! Well done girls!

BIS triumph in HCMC Cricket Competition

Last weekend, 12 BIS students took part in the Vietnam Junior Cricket Association Competition. In the U12 competition, Pranav, Zaeem, and Abdullah joined two other students to take on The Boat Yard team. All three students scored runs, took wickets and held catches but eventually lost by 2 runs in an incredibly close game. In the U16 match, Rishi, Prannav, Adeep and Suhan competed with Faraz, Esmaeel, Harry and Jonathan. It was an exciting match with lots of big hitting but the more accurate bowling from Rishi’s team eventually made the difference as they won by 27 runs. Raghav took part in the U19 competition and claimed the gold medal with his team. He bowled with his usual pace and accuracy, taking wickets with his first two balls and four wickets altogether.

SISAC Finals

This week all of the BIS sports teams were in action in the culmination of Season 1 District and City Championship finals.

The week started with U13 Basketball and quick turn around rematches against ISHCMC. The U13 boys battled bravely but were up against a big and physical ISHCMC opponent who were too strong for our talented basketballers. Point Guard Will playing himself into the ground for a closely contested 17-25 victory to ISHMC. A City 3rd/4th play off against SSIS at home. This game proved to be one of BIS best and most convincing performance, with Khan running his magic in a comprehensive 60-27 win for BIS and earning them a 3rd place in the City position.

It was also close in the girls game at U13 against ISHCMC in the District final. However, the set moves paid off and they were able to overcome a large opponent with skill. Julia and her silky play earned the girls a 16-10 victory to set BIS up with a City Championship Game against SSIS away. This match proved to be a difficult one for the away team and the girls valiant effort meant that they had to accept a 9-20 defeat and claim the runners up in the city prize.

The U15 boys and girls basketball teams both missed out on a City Championships game due to a three way tied points difference. So they had to settle for a District Play off game instead. Both teams were not to settle for anything less than best in those games, making the opponents chase the ball and the game in great victories for both teams. David taking player of the match for the boys in a 38-18 win and Ngoc for the girls in a 29-10 win.

The U19 girls volleyball team had the chance to beat their opening game opponents in the District play off match and made short work of it on home court, beating EIS 2-0 with Hannah playing her best game of the season in the win. In the District Final, the boys came up against an ISHCMC team yet to lose a set never mind a game. The U19 boys played outstandingly to miss out on the first set by a couple of points, win the second set and then agonisingly lose the tie-breaking third set 11-15. Player of the match Bonny typified the BIS fighting spirit. The boys now play AISVN on Friday in the City 34d/4th play off game.

In the Cross Country City Championships the teams travelled to Nha Be to run around the AISVN campus. The U19 teams 5 times, U15 squad 4K and the U13 runners 3 laps. Each team had all 5 finishers in the top 20 (of 50 runners in each event). The U13 boys and girls especially performing well getting all runners in the tope 10. It was not enough to take gold though, with BIS finishing in a very respectable 3rd place of combined age and gender results from the 10 competing schools.  Runner of the day goes to Subin for running up an age group and still finishing in 4th place!
