Is Art Therapeutic? What is Expressionism?
There are questions I ask my IGCSE Year 10 Artists.
Today, we learned about who some of the key Expressionists Artists were and we created an artwork to show a particular emotion. Students had to consider what an emotion LOOKS like to them. This is not easy. What media will they use? What type of markmaking will they try? What type of line? How thick? How thin? What textures might they try? What colours would they use? What tones? Students tried to work intuitively. It felt very odd, as we usually plan what we will draw and paint and refer to visual references. For the first time in the course, it was more about process than the final product. This can be liberating and the students thoroughly enjoyed being Expressionists!
I look forward to the future discussions we will have about emotions and Art, we made a great start today.
I wonder if you can guess the emotions from the examples here.
