One of the highlights of student life at British International School of Chicago, Lincoln Park is International Day, a recurring tradition that brings together the diverse and vibrant international community and allows students the opportunity to travel the world in one day without ever leaving school! Held annually, this event is a spirited display of culture, connection, and the joy of learning about the world around us.
Parent-Led Cultural Showcases:
International Day is a parent-run event, and each year, a dedicated group of volunteers steps up to represent various countries, bringing their unique cultures to life for students and staff alike. The parents, dressed in traditional clothing, create an immersive experience by sharing food, cultural items, and fascinating facts about their countries’ history, arts, customs, and practices. The day is filled with vibrant displays, with each country booth offering a snapshot of its culture that is both educational and fun.
The high point of International Day, without a doubt, is the food. Volunteers generously offer a delicious sampling of traditional items from their respective countries, giving everyone a chance to try flavors from all over the globe. From Pão de Queijo to Pączki, there’s something to satisfy every palate. For many students, it’s the perfect introduction to international cuisine as they taste their way around the world!
A Celebration of Community and Inclusion:
But International Day isn’t just about food—it’s about learning and growing together as a community. Students “travel the globe” with their paper passports, visiting each country booth to gather stamps from their visits. As they make their way around, they not only enjoy the tasty offerings but also absorb valuable knowledge about different cultures. At each table, volunteers share stories and insights, educating the students about the significance of certain traditions, important landmarks, or famous figures from their countries. The interactive experience creates lasting memories and fosters a deeper appreciation for the world’s rich diversity.
In addition to the booths, International Day also features performances from students and local artists, showcasing dances, songs, and music from around the world. These performances are a true highlight of the day, bringing the global spirit of the event to life through the arts.
