At BISC-LP, we believe that writing should feel meaningful, exciting, and connected to the real world. When children know that their writing has a genuine audience, everything changes: motivation rises, attention to detail grows, and the joy of sharing ideas becomes a driving force in the learning process. This academic year, our children have embraced purposeful writing in powerful ways, turning their words into opportunities to connect, collaborate, and create.
Creating Characters with Purpose: Year 4 and South Loop Collaboration
Year 4 stepped into the magical world of Willy Wonka as they crafted vivid descriptions of brand-new characters who might one day enter the chocolate factory. But this wasn’t writing “just for the teacher,” the purpose went far beyond that.
Students at our South Loop campus served as illustrators, using Year 4’s descriptions to create original character artwork. The moment our writers realized that another student (someone relying entirely on their words) would bring their character to life, their writing instantly sharpened. The result? Stunning illustrations, joyful writers, and a wonderful cross‑campus collaboration that showcased the power of writing with a real reader in mind.
Hot Chocolate, Cookies & Creativity: Year 4’s New Wonka Bar Showcase
One of the highlights in Term 1 was Year 4’s Hot Chocolate and Cookie Showcase, a deliciously themed event celebrating creativity across multiple subjects.
Students designed and constructed 3D models of brand‑new Wonka chocolate bars, each bursting with imagination and flair. To accompany their models, pupils wrote fictional promotional pieces, using persuasive language to “sell” their inventive creations to an audience of peers, teachers, and parents.
Warm mugs of hot chocolate and fresh cookies created the perfect atmosphere for families and visitors to browse the displays, read the promotional writing, and marvel at the inventiveness of our young chocolatiers -turned authors. The showcase not only celebrated hard work but also highlighted how creative writing, design, and presentation skillscome together in authentic, joyful learning experiences.

A Dragon with a Message: Year 4 Letters to Year 2
Year 4 has also explored formal letter writing through the mischievous voice of Grendel, a greedy little dragon with plenty to say. After drafting their letters, students sent them to Year 2, who eagerly awaited correspondence from this fiery character. For Year 4, this meant carefully considering tone, clarity, and structure—after all, younger pupils were the audience. For Year 2, the letters sparked excitement, curiosity, and rich discussions about characters and storytelling. This purposeful exchange strengthened communication skills while building warm connections across year groups.

Suspense Comes to Life: Year 6 Stories Shared with Year 4
In Year 6, students have been mastering the art of suspense, creating tension, crafting atmosphere, and developing gripping story moments. To give their writing purpose, they shared their finished stories with Year 4, who became their genuine audience.
This experience was powerful on both sides:

Why Purpose Matters
Across these projects, one theme stands out: writing comes alive when it has a purpose. When children write for someone beyond the classroom walls, or even for peers in another year group, or campus, they:
Purpose and Celebration Promotes Powerful Learning
When writing has both purpose and celebration, students flourish. They write with intention, share with pride, and see themselves as real authors whose words influence, entertain, and inspire. We are incredibly proud of the thoughtful, imaginative, and purposeful writing emerging across our school, and we look forward to many more opportunities to showcase the voices of our young authors.
