European Day of Languages

European Day of Languages - European Day of Languages
European Day of Languages

We are thrilled to share the resounding success of our European Day of Languages celebration, with a special focus on the enchanting country of Czechia. This event was a captivating journey through language, culture, and the spirit of giving.

Exploring the Heart of Czechia

Our European Day of Languages celebration took us on an exhilarating exploration of Czechia – a dynamic and ever-changing country with a rich history and vibrant culture. This year, our theme of "Transition and Change" beautifully intertwined with the works of Czechia's most famous author, Franz Kafka, known for his literary exploration of transformation and metamorphosis. As symbols of change, butterflies and beetles adorned our event, connecting us to Kafka's powerful narratives.

Dressed in Czechia's Colours

Students had the option to immerse themselves in Czechia's spirit by dressing up as butterflies, beetles, or donning the colors of the Czech flag. It was heartwarming to see our school community embrace the theme, bringing the vibrant culture of Czechia to life.

Baking for a Cause

Our Czech Charity Bake Sale was a tremendous success, raising over 7500 RMB for the Tanzania Fund and the Nekoshelter for abandoned animals. The generosity of our students, staff, and parents was heartwarming. Authentic Czech baked goods filled our hearts and stomachs, and many even dared to learn the names of these delectable treats.

Uniting for a Common Cause

This event served as a wonderful opportunity for parents to get involved and show their support. It was a warm, collegial gathering that truly showcased the generosity of spirit that defines our school community. Together, we can make a difference.

Art and Creativity Flourish

Our students had the privilege of exploring the mesmerising art of Alphonse Mucha, a Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist. They learned about his unique style, studied his masterpieces, and even had the chance to recreate someof his iconic works in their Art classes. The result was a burst of creativity and artistic expression across all age groups.

Language Learning Through Song and Friendship

One of the core aspects of this celebration was language. Students had the opportunity to learn basic Czech phrases, including greetings and numbers 1 to 10, through singing and interacting with their Czech peers. Language became a bridge, fostering cross-cultural friendships and understanding.

Collaboration Across Departments

This event was a true testament to the collaborative spirit of our staff. Teachers from various departments seamlessly integrated the Czech theme into their subject areas, providing students with a holistic and immersive experience.

A beautifully creative and visual historical timeline was put up outside the History department, in Primary Year 5 Art, students crafted a colour wheel inspired by Franz Kafka’s renowned novel “Metamorphosis”. In Secondary Art, students displayed their creativity by linking Alphonse Mucha’s art on display in the Well of Knowledge to that of Asian art tradition.

In EAL, the students went on a day trip to the Klimt Exhibition in Shanghai. Klimt was one of Mucha’s contemporaries, representing youth, freedom and change in his masterpieces. The depth of knowledge and creativity displayed by our educators was truly inspiring.

In MFL classes, students not only tried their hand at learning greetings in Czech, they were charmed by the simple pleasures of handicrafts. There was much kinesthetic and personalised learning at play, with cards, insect stamps, ink and wax, cutting out butterflies for our displays, making beautiful bookmarks adorned by Mucha art pieces, as well as puzzles, glue, glitter and feathers and a lot of gold pen!

The students were able to listen to Dvorak and watch Czech trailers in the Well of Knowledge while tasting the delights from the Czech bake sale, from Babovka and traditional gingerbread to Kolacky (mini cakes with soft cheese) and delicious plum cake.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our parents, students, staff, and the Charity Committee for their unwavering support in making this event a resounding success. It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and the joy of giving back to the community.

Our European Day of Languages celebration served as a reminder of the beauty of language diversity and cultural exchange. It highlighted our commitment to fostering an inclusive and globally minded community, where we can all learn from each other's experiences and perspectives.

Thank you for your enthusiastic participation, and we look forward to more enriching cultural experiences in the future. Together, we continue to grow, learn, and make a positive impact on the world.
