Year 4 had a brilliant time during Science Week learning all about the digestive system and how their bodies process food.
The week began with the children using the green screen to take photos of themselves, before adding a picture of the organs in the digestive system. Using digital media, the children then labelled their ‘insides’. With the organs named, it was then time for Year 4 to get their hands dirty. They replicated the digestive system processes using household items, biscuits, orange juice (to represent stomach acids) and water (to represent saliva). At each stage of the investigation photos were taken which were then used to create an iMovie explaining how digestion works.
Running throughout the week, Year 4 also conducted an investigation into the effects of different drinks on tooth enamel. Using eggs instead of teeth (the eggshell is similar to tooth enamel), Year 4 planned, made predictions and set up their investigation. Each day, the children made careful observations of any changes to the enamel, thinking about the colour and texture. They can’t wait to conclude their investigation this week - there might be some surprising results.
The week provided a great opportunity for the children to work collaboratively and in different ways, demonstrate resilience, ask BIG questions and to make careful scientific observations.
