Bugsy Malone School Production

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, BSKL put on a spectacular show of the musical Bugsy Malone. Huge congratulations to everyone involved.

I am super grateful, proud and impressed by the cast, crew, band and staff, who worked on our Secondary School Musical Production for March 2023: Bugsy Malone.
Opportunities to see and to be part of live theatre in KL are limited, and we wanted to take the kids on a highly experiential learning journey. From the start, the lead teachers in their various creative departments gave the students training, leadership opportunities and autonomy over their roles within those teams. It was highly impressive to see each department come together, resulting in a superbly dazzling, funny and high energy performance (not to mention messy!)
Every now and then, we reflect on our childhood and our school days. The stand-out moments are always the time in which we are surrounded by our friends, feeling passionate and excited. My hope is that our students will do the same. I hope that in 20 years’ time, when they tell their own families about their school days, that they remember their role in this show, feel that sense of excitement and pride, and maybe even remember a song lyric or two 😋

The students who worked on creating the stage sets and props were amazing to work with. They displayed the ability to self-manage and collaborate to achieve a shared goal. The props and stage set serve an important role of bringing the stage to life and helping the actors to imagine the scenes they are in. We were so impressed with the quality of the outcomes produced and with how the students rose to challenge displaying maturity and enthusiasm – Great work team!

The costume team were a complete joy to work with – I was initially concerned that we were a new team and might struggle to deal with all the changes of both clothing and make-up, but the initiative shown by the students was incredible. In the end, my main role was simply to organise and check, with the costume team taking the lead and ensuring that everything was completed when it needed to be. They demonstrated skills of leadership, organisation, resilience and adaptability, which will all serve them well in the future. I am already looking forward to working with them again next year.

With so much musical talent at BSKL there were serious band auditions at the start of the year and the final lineup did not disappoint.   From the ballads to the fast dance hall numbers they worked together as one and produced an amazing performance both nights.  A special mention must go to Abeer Kumar in Year 8 who had twice as much to do as everyone else providing all the gun shots, door knocks and other sound effects.   They were a joy to work with and we are already looking forward to the next one.
