We were very lucky to welcome 10 professionals who gave their time to speak with students. The range of industries represented was broad and included sustainability, education, NGOs, oil and gas, the public sector, marketing, journalism, hospitality (chef and restaurant owner), voice acting, and writing. It was a powerful reminder that there is no single “path” after school – and that GCSE choices are about keeping doors open, not closing them.
The carousel itself was run conference centre-style. Students prepared questions in advance, then rotated around each table in small groups. Each speaker approached the event differently: some set students tasks, others brought materials, some focused on questioning, while others shared personal stories and practical advice. This variety kept the sessions fresh and ensured students were actively involved throughout.
Just as importantly, our Year 9s represented themselves superbly. They asked thoughtful, mature questions, listened carefully, and engaged confidently with adults they had never met before. Several speakers commented on the quality of the interactions and how impressed they were by how articulate and curious the students came across.
The carousel was the culmination of Careers Day, which forms a key part of our GCSE options process. Across the day, students completed a future Authoringactivity to reflect on their strengths, interests, personalities, and values; researched GCSE subjects and potential career pathways; and even gave careers advice to their peers based on what they had learned.
A particular highlight was the business planning session, where students worked in groups using a bespoke app developed by BSKL. The app guided them step-by-step through building a business plan, encouraging teamwork, decision-making, and creative problem-solving. Alongside this, students tested their judgement and risk-assessment skills through a business simulation game, making choices and seeing real-time consequences.
Taken together, the day was carefully designed to help students look ahead, understand themselves better, and begin forging their own goals with confidence and realism.
Thank you to all the professionals who supported the event, and to the staff who helped make the day such a success. Most of all, well done to Year 9 for approaching the experience with maturity, energy, and an open mind.
