BSKL’s student-led band, “The Jazz Collective”, closed the year with a big bang with their fundraising shows. On the evenings of 7th December and 28th December, The Jazz Collective and friends took centre stage for two fundraising concerts. The events aimed to raise funds for MyStarfish, an organisation that serves children with life-limiting illnesses and their families and is building a pediatric palliative care centre. They played to sold-out events, at the B.A.T.S restaurant in Kota Damansara and every song was met with euphoric cheers and roaring applause. The band’s story was covered by national news outlets The Star and Free Malaysia Today.
Drawing a crowd of students, teachers, and community members at the events, the band delivered energetic setlistsfeaturing iconic jazz pieces, festive tunes and famous melodies. Their dedication and enthusiasm drew a full house to both events, which contributed in the form of tickets, donations and auctions. The team has also been doing merchandising sales in order to supplement the funds raised, and they have already surpassed the initial collection target of RM15,000.
At the same time, their talents were recognised by a professional band, Jazz Orchestra of Kuala Lumpur (“JOKL”), who subsequently invited them to perform at their Christmas event at The Campus, Ampang.
The Jazz Collective is a group of Year 11 students who started jamming at the age of 12 and 13 and have stayed together as friends since. The band members are Abeer (drums), Elijah (bass guitar), Gisselle (trumpet), Jern Huang (keys), Simon (clarinet), and Scott (saxophone). They are joined in this fundraising drive by guest singers Caitlin, Maya, Paxton, Ryan and BSKL alumni Shyen Yii.
With their sheer discipline and teamwork, they have succeeded in creating value for society from their talent, proving that even the youngest voices can make a meaningful difference.
